Kwame Kilpatrick Released
After serving 14 months of his 5 year sentence, Detroit’s former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was set free Tuesday.
The politician was sentenced after violating parole relating to a 2008 case where he attempted to cover up an extramarital affair. Kilpatrick also was charged for assaulting a police officer, but pleaded no contest.
After spending a little more than three months in jail, he was released on five years probation with orders to pay restitution from his original plea bargain. It wasn’t long before Kilpatrick was seeing jail cells again, almost exactly a year later he was sentenced to five years in prison for violating probation when he did not report his assets that could have been used to pay the $860,000 in restitution.
The former mayor may be walking free, but he isn’t a free man just yet, Kilpatrick is still facing federal charges from his days as Detroit’s chief executive, which includes such offenses as racketeering, extortion, bribery and filing false tax returns.
