The Southern California set of rapper Y.G.’s ‘”I’m A Thug” music video erupted in violence before being shut down by police Wednesday (Jan. 25) afternoon. Several bystanders were congregating near the 400 block of W. Spruce St. in Compton when gun shots rang out, forcing the crowd to scatter as police intervened and closed off the entire area. Authorities have yet to report any fatalities, or reveal whether or not any suspects were apprehended for the shooting.
Maybach Music MC, Meek Mill, was also scheduled to attend the video shoot but had not yet arrived. Y.G. left the location and took to his Twitter page to address the incident, “Ima thug f— the cops & the judge,” he tweeted alongside a photo of squad cars.
This isn’t the first time that a Y.G. appearance has been met with violence. Last November members of the Crip gang swarmed his show at a San Diego nightclub. The “Toot It and Boot It” rapper is said to be associated with the opposing TreeTop Piru’s Blood gang out of Compton.
As one of the buzzed about rappers chosen for XXL’s 2011 Freshman Class cover, Y.G. has gained popularity for being one of the new young rappers out of the West Coast. He recently teamed with fellow West Coasters Kendrick Lamar, Cassey Veggies and Dom Kennedy on the Respect the West showcase at the SXSW Musicfest in Austin, Texas. His latest single “Thug Life” features Mill, and will appear on Y.G.’s forthcoming 400 Degrees mixtape, due to drop this spring.
