Geraldo Rivera Says Hoodie Is Responsible For Trayvon Martin’s Death [VIDEO]

Geraldo Rivera hasn’t been the same since he only found some empty bottles in Al Capone’s vault back in ’86. Today on Fox And Friends, of course, Rivera commented on the slaying of Trayvon Martin at the hands of wannabe police officer/Neighborhood Watch vigilante George Zimmerman.

“I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman,” said Geraldo. That’s not a well chopped, sensational pullquote.  Think Progress transcribed the entire exchange between Rivera and the show’s hosts and guests:

BRIAN KILMEADE (co-host): Let’s talk about the Trayvon Martin case and what’s going on in Florida right now.

GERALDO RIVERA: I believe that George Zimmerman, the overzealous neighborhood watch captain should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law and if he is criminally liable, he should be prosecuted. But I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies. I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.

JULIET HUDDY (guest-host): What do you mean?

RIVERA: When you, when you see a kid walking — Juliet — when you see a kid walking down the street, particularly a dark skinned kid like my son Cruz, who I constantly yelled at when he was going out wearing a damn hoodie or those pants around his ankles. Take that hood off, people look at you and they — what do they think? What’s the instant identification, what’s the instant association?

STEVE DOOCY (co-host): Uh-oh.

RIVERA: It’s those crime scene surveillance tapes. Every time you see someone sticking up a 7-11, the kid is wearing a hoodie. […] When you see a black or Latino youngster, particularly on the street, you walk to the other side of the street. You try to avoid that confrontation.

So by Rivera asinine logic, anyone wearing a hoodie, who is also unarmed, is asking to get murdered in cold blood. By that same logic, any Black or Latino kid that sees an officer in uniform should be wary since they tend to stomp out and murder that demographic, right?

There is also the fact that Martin was wearing a hoodie because it was reportedly raining that fateful day he went to the store to cop some Skittles and an iced tea. That sure doesn’t sound like a “gangsta wannabe,” Geraldo.

I live in Los Angeles and kids are mowed down here every week for wearing their pants around their butts or wearing hoodies so let’s stop being so sensitive about some of the things said by others which in Mr. Rivera’s case happens to be true. When you look at these young people dressed like this it gives the impression of thugs and gang bangers although it may not be true with all who dress like this but it still gives the impression that you are some how involves in a gang and what they will do is ask that question(where you from) and no matter what you say it is never the right answer all because  of your dress and this in turn caused others to think that you are a gang banger or  you are up to no good.So yes If I had minor children I would definitely not allow them to wear clothing that could cause some nut to take their life and that’s not stereotyping kids from all races wear those hoodies including grown folk.

  • Blame the Hoodie? GIVE ME A BREAK. It was raining…. the kid was running…..and ….SORRY… but we don’t ALL use Totes umbrellas when going to the corner grocery store for a snack. Nor should we risk losing our lives while doing so!  And by his own admission, Mr. Zimmerman, the gunman, was stalking unarmed Trayvon – against the advice of the police (via cellphone contact). Mr. Rivera: you should be ashamed of your inane, insensitive comments, and your attempts to create “excuses” for the inexcusable actions of judge-jury-executioner Zimmerman. We are becoming a society that sees threats under every rock; a society that sees danger  with every “other” that is not like us;  a society with power hungry control-freaks (whether politicians or mayors or police chiefs or individuals) that are only too eager to take advantage of our fears; that are only too eager to get away with anything that they can, as they deprive us of our our liberty (and sometimes our lives), in the name of defending it. This is part of a slippery slope that includes the worst provisions of the Patriot Act, police spying on innocent people, papers-please and stop&frisk gone wild,  the “right” to indefinitely detain Americans without trial, and homicidal “vigilantes” such as we have tragically seen here. It’s a slippery slope that leads to a police state/Orwellian mentality that is typical of places such as China, Cuba, or 1960’s Communist Eastern Europe. We used to stand proud and free, and contrasted our open society to such places. Now we imitate them. Our country is better than this. WE are better than this.

I must say, as a black man I hear Geraldo frustration. He himself has a dark skinned child. And their. Are certain things that you wear that will get you profiled. Its not Trayvons fault he died. Zimmerman is WRONG. But like Geraldo said its when you turn on the news you often see a black or latino in a hoodie. The acts of the wrong makes its hard for the good like Trayvon. As a young black man their are certain clothing that I would be concious about letting my child wear as well. So I blame Zimmerman and those criminals that have given hoodies the bad reputation that they have.

Geraldo just reconfirmed why he’s not relevant anymo’!  Him & zimmerman are from the same heritage, therefor they both think the same.  Imagine if Heraldo wuz doin’ patrol & had a gun, if he had some heart he’d probably shoot anyone who looks suspicious too.
I say bring both of those racist wanna-be devils to Brooklyn – where hoodies are very popular – and see what they wanna do then….-

hoods were once worn by druids, then monks, and represent hidden knowledge and mystical power.  remember when England tried to ban them altogether.  the racist old guard are afraid of the power of youth, and magic in general. think I’m full of it? wait until next year when the power of spirit is fully manifest and all these demons melt away like the nazis in raiders of the lost ark.
