One month after her husband filed his comments, First Lady Michelle Obama shared her opinion on the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Much like the sentiments felt by most of country, and likely the world, Mrs. Obama called the killing of the 17-year-old a “tragedy,” but encouraged the public to keep their focus on supporting Martin’s family. “It’s important for us not to lose sight of the fact that this is a family that’s grieving and there’s been a tremendous loss,” she said.  “We all have to rally around that piece of it.”

She also noted that there is no easy solution to quieting the public’s anger over the shooting. Since his death in late February, celebrities, politicians, and every day citizens, have rallied together calling for the arrest of the unarmed teen’s killer, George Zimmerman. Martin’s murder has also heightened interest in racially driven cases, but Mrs. Obama said that discourse over injustices shouldn’t only occur after someone has lost their life.  “They can’t come in spits and starts when there’s an incident,” she continued.  “I think we all need, as a country, to continue to talk about these issues, to understand our communities and the challenges that we face, which are different and unique depending upon where you live. It’s all about, you know, continuing to get to know ourselves in a very diverse and complicated country that is America.

“It is a wonderful place to live. But because it is so diverse, our challenges are complex. So there isn’t, you know, a one-shot solution to this. It is complicated. It takes time. It takes openness. It takes compassion. It takes patience. And it takes a lot of work. So we should all be ready to roll up our sleeves and keep doing that work.”

In March, Pres. Obama called for the shooting to be investigated, after Florida police concluded their inquiry into the case.  Zimmerman later turned himself in to face second-degree murder charges, and is due to be arraigned May 29.
