The interim chief taking over at the Sanford Police Department promises to look deeper into potential missteps in the investigation following the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Chief Rick Myers, who replaced Chief Bill Lee who stepped down in the aftermath of public outrage behind his decision to let George Zimmerman walk free the same day that he gunned down the 17-year-old.

During a news conference Friday (May 4). Myers detailed his plan of action. “I will study and learn and listen,” he said. “Most of all, I will listen.” Although he is only expected to hold the post for three months or more Myers noted that some of his colleagues encouraged him to “run in the opposite direction,” given the controversial status of the case.

Lee stepped down at the height of the public outcry over the lack of legal action brought against Zimmerman. After asking to be formally removed from the position, the city later voted to deny his request until an official legal outcome in the Martin murder case is reached.
