Rev. Al Sharpton and Newt Gingrich are far from friends, and they made their disdain for one another abundantly clear during a verbal sparring match on MSNBC Wednesday (June 13).

Sharpton, who hosts the show Politics Nation, had Gingrich on to talk about his ill-fated White House bid, and his thoughts on President Obama. The 30-minute conversation quickly got heated with Sharpton calling Gingrich to the carpet over some of his comments, most notably regarding black people using food stamps. “You said some questionable things about poor people in this country,” said Sharpton. “Now, Mr. Gingrich, you know you should have known better and I think you do know better.” Noting that the two have traveled together, at the request of Pres. Obama, Sharpton held nothing back during the conversation. “Now I have to ask you, is this kind of language you use just playing to the right wing? Playing to the far right, with racially tinged language?”

Gingrich defended himself by alleging his rants have not been targeted at blacks, but people of all races. “Having a conservative Republican who cares that there’s 43 percent black teenage unemployment, I would think is a good thing,” he said. “Having a conservative republican whose eager to go to the NAACP and meet with them and talk about real issues, I would think is a good thing,”

Sharpton countered Gingrich’s rebuttal by stating that more Whites are on public assistance than any other races, making his defense null and void.
