Less than one day after a judge set his bail at $1 million, George Zimmerman’s lawyer, Mike O’Mara, took to his client’s website to beg for money. Having already raised nearly $500,000 in donations, O’Mara explained that Zimmerman’s defense and living expenses continue to rise, and although he will only need $100,000 to post bond, he must also put up $1 million in collateral. “In order to get out of jail, Mr. Zimmerman will have to pay a bail bond company $100,000 (10% of the bond amount) and have collateral worth $1,000,000,” reads the post.

“George Zimmerman and his family do not have anywhere near $1,000,000 for collateral so even if we pay the $100,000 fee, the bail bond company will have to agree to work with us on how the collateral would be posted. We are encouraged we can work this out. We paid $15,000 initially for the first bail fee so an additional fee of $85,000 would have to be paid to post this new bond assuming we can work out the collateral issue.”

Although the accused killer has $211,000 in his legal defense fund, $40,000 is allotted for other bills, which do not include O’Mara’s  attorney fee. As such, paying 10 percent of his bond amount will “wipe out the existing balance.”

O’Mara goes on to attempt to pull at the heart-strings of potential funders by throwing race into the equation, and painting Zimmerman as the victim. “For those who have given in the past, for those who have thought about giving, for those who feel Mr. Zimmerman was justified in his actions,” he continued. “For those who feel they would do the same if they were in Mr. Zimmerman’s shoes, for those that think Mr. Zimmerman has been treated unfairly by the media, for those who feel Mr. Zimmerman has been falsely accused as a racist, for those who feel this case is an affront to their constitutional rights — now is the time to show your support.”

While initial support spiked after the 28-year-old was ordered back into custody last month, the numbers have since dwindled down.  If he is unable to come up with the money, Zimmerman will sit in jail until the start of his second-degree murder trial, which may not be until the top of next year, since he waved his right to a speedy trial.
