President Obama wants to put greater emphasis on the importance of math and science, and has proposed a $1 billion plan to aid in the process. The president’s administration revealed the plan Wednesday (July 18) in an attempt to help American students achieve feats in math, science, and technology.

The STEM Master Teacher Corps plan, will begin small by including 2,500 teachers among the 50 states,  a number which will expand to 10,000 over four years. “If America is going to compete for the jobs and industries of tomorrow, we need to make sure our children are getting the best education possible,” Obama said in a statement.

Teachers selected for the Master Teacher Corps must commit to multiple years, and will be rewarded with a $20,000 annual bonus for educating their peers, and working to improve education for students across the country.

$100 million, pulled  from the Teacher Incentive Fund, will be put towards the STEM plan, and over the next decade Obama hopes to include a total of 100,000 teachers for the initiative.

Not surprisingly, Republicans have not been accepting of the proposal. Rep. John Kline pointed out that there are over 80 programs aimed at improving the quality of education in his country, therefore adding an additional plan would be a waste of money. “Republicans share the president’s goal of getting better teachers in the classroom,” said his spokesperson Alexandra Sollberger.  “However, we also value transparency and efficient use of taxpayer resources.”

While the goal is to increase training in math and science, so students can meet with economic demand once they enter the workforce, Obama is projected to have trouble getting the plan approved by Congress.
