The parents of Trayvon Martin were not moved by George Zimmerman’s first television interview which aired on Fox News Wednesday (July 18). While Zimmerman offered an apology to Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, they did not feel that their son’s accused killers offered any real remorse.

Among the many comments that they took issue with was Zimmerman’s revelation that the events that transpired on the night of Feb. 26. were part of “God’s plan.”  Appearing on NBC’s Today  show with their lawyer, Benjamin Crump, Thursday (July 19)  morning, the Martin family expressed their unhappiness with the accused killer’s remarks. “I really think that’s ridiculous” Futlon said of Zimmerman’s speech about God. “I wish Trayvon was here to tell his side of the story, and I don’t believe that’s God’s plan, for him to kill an innocent teenager.”

During the hour-long sit down, Zimmerman cleared up what he saw as misconceptions about what transpired that night, as well as his damaged public image. He told Fox News reporter Shawn Hannity that he would like to meet the teen’s parents on day, a request which was shot down by Fulton. “Absolutely not,” she said when asked if she would be willing to have a face-to-face encounter with the former neighborhood watch captain.

Another big topic of discussion during the interview was whether or not the  28-year-old is racist, accusations which he denied, citing is bi-racial background, and the fact that he learned English as a second language, as evidence.  Zimmerman also stated that he considers himself Hispanic, and discredited the relative who claimed that he dislikes Black people, pointing to the fact that the FBI cleared him of  any racially motivated wrongdoing.

According to Crump the broadcast was yet another damaging blow to Zimmerman’s defense. “It speaks for itself when you listen to the objective evidence, just listen to the 911 tapes,” referencing Zimmerman’s claim that he did not pursue Martin despite informing the 911 dispatcher that he was doing so. “There’s so many inconsistencies in what George Zimmerman is saying. The state attorney is going to look at the interview that he did last night as a gift, when they cross examine him.”

Currently free on bond, Zimmerman’s trial will likely begin later in the year.
