New York is still up in arms over its “stop-and-frisk” policy, but a Brooklyn mother feels that it could have saved her son’s life.
Natasha Christopher, the mother of 15-year-old Akeal Christopher who was shot after leaving a graduation party last month, wishes that her child’s killer would have been spotted by police. “My son is gone because of an illegal gun on the street,” Christopher told the New York Post. “If they had frisked the person who killed my son, it would have been one less gun on the streets. I’m for it.”
The teen was declared brain dead after being rushed to a local hospital, and died on his birthday. “That was the worst day in my life,” she said of losing her eldest son. “To watch my son die? It hurts like hell. I asked God to take my life and save his.”
As a mother to three sons, Christopher said she did everything in her power to shield her children from gun violence, including enforcing a strict curfew. On the night that Akeal was shot, he was spending the summer with his father and was allowed to be out later than usual. While walking with his friends and cousins, Akeal was confronted by two men who asked if he had any gang affiliation, before he was shot in the back of the head.
Akeal’s wake will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Caribe Funeral Home, while his funeral is scheduled for Friday (July 20) at Brooklyn’s Wayside Baptists Church.
