A deranged killer wasn’t enough to stop movie fans from supporting The Dark Knight Rises. The highly anticipated film pulled in an impressive $160 million over the weekend.

While final estimates will not be released until Monday (July 23), the film earned the No. 3 spot on the list of highest debuts ever falling behind The Avengers which opened with $207.4 million and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2, at $169.2 million.

Gunman James Holmes opened fire on a crowd of moviegoers during a midnight screening of the film at an Aurora, Colorado theater Friday (July 20). The 24-year-old medical school student, entered the venue dressed in all black with red hair, and was initially believed to be a movie fan, until he threw tear gas into the crowd and began shooting people at random.

Among those killed included a 27-year-old man who was celebrating his birthday by seeing the film, a 6-year-old girl who was shot alongside her mother, and another 27-year-old man who died protecting his girlfriend.

More than 60 people were injured in the shooting.

Holmes remains in police custody and has not been cooperating with authorities.
