The fight for making gay marriage legal around the country has found its youngest supporter. Kameron Slade, 10, offered up a speech before ew York City Council members on why he believes that homos-xual couples should be allowed to marry, Wednesday (July 25).  The Queens native stood before politicians more than twice his age, as he read the address. “President Barack Obama recently talked about same-s-x marriage with his wife and two daughters. Some people are for same-gender marriage, while others are against it,” he said. “Like President Obama, I believe that all people should have the right to marry whoever they want. Marriage is about love, support and commitment. So who are we to judge?”

Slade penned the speech two months ago for a competition at his school, P.S. 195. Principal Beryl Bailey, concluded that his words were inappropriate for students, and barred him from delivering his thoughts.  A local news station got wind of the story, prompting Council speaker Christine C. Quinn to invite him to speak during the meeting.

His mother, April Grantham-Slade, helped him come up with a topic that was not being discussed by his classmates. The youngster chose the controversial issues after hearing President Obama’s thoughts on the matter.  “I want my children to be accepting,” she said.

Despite being in front of a room full of adults, the student did not crack under pressure. “I felt very confident when I was doing it,” he said.  “I feel honored because not many people get to do this.”

Gay marriage has received support from politicians and Hip-Hop stars alike. Over the last few months, Colin Powell, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay-Z have all spoke out in approval of the issue.
