A police officer in South St. Louis County tased a 12-year-old girl during an attempt to arrest her mother, last Wednesday (July 25). The incident occurred inside a Victoria’s Secret at the South County Center. According to authorities, the mother –Charlene Bratton—had warrants stemming from traffic tickets.
Dejamon Baker, started crying when the officer instructed her mother to put her arms behind her back, to be handcuffed. “I was just crying. I guess he got mad because I was crying or something, then he just took it out and just tased me,” explained the little girl. “I had fell on the floor and I couldn’t control myself I just kept on shaking and stuff,”she said of getting shocked with the device.
While a spokesperson for the police department said that the officer did nothing wrong since the girl got “physically involved” in the incident, Bratton shared a different perspective. “He should have had enough control to tell her to get back instead of pulling out his gun, I guess he was nervous or whatever, and tasing people,” she said.
Police tend to use tasers on those suspected of wrongdoing, not children. Last month a Florida man was zapped after he was questioned about jaywalking, and in May, a pregnant woman was tasered following a verbal exchange with an officer who came to her home because one of her 15 children was accused of throwing a rock at another residence.
In the case of Baker, her mother has plans on filing an incident report with internal affairs.
