David Siegel, a Florida real estate mogul, has made explosive claims about the 2000 election that helped put President George W. Bush in office. The election was a clear act of cheating, after several votes in the state—which was governed by Bush’s brother at the time—just happened to go uncounted.
Siegel is the billionaire behind the timeshare company, Westgate Resorts, and alleges that he is “personally responsible” for the win, but failed to give too many details besides stating that “it may not necessarily have been legal.”
His statements were made in the documentary The Queen of Versailles which focuses on Siegel and his wife building a 90,000-square-foot Florida mansion modeled after Versailles. Although clips of his words about Bush were not made available to the media, Siegel was unhappy with the way that he was portrayed in the film, and filed a defamation lawsuit one day before it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Plagued by the recession, Siegel and his wife halted construction on the estate, but things have since improved. “We’re the most profitable we’ve ever been,” he said of Westgate, which is the largest privately held time-share company in the world.
In a 2009 interview with Orlando Magazine Siegel sang a completely different tune taking credit for helping Bush get 2,000 votes, but was clear that he did not break the law.
President Bush’s camp has yet to respond to Siegel’s claims.
