The FBI announced Thursday (Aug. 2) that it will join the investigation into the shooting death of 21-year-old Chavis Carter.

Carter was pulled over by Arkansas police, handcuffed, and put in the back of a squad car. From there, cops claim that he somehow managed to shoot himself in the right temple, despite being left-handed.

According to a police report, both officers allege that they were not near the vehicle when the shooting occurred, however FBI agents are expected to have ballistic experts look further into the matter to determine whether or not the gun was fired by Carter, or another person. “We’ve been asked to get involved,” spokeswoman Kim Brunell of the FBI’s Little Rock location, told the Huffington Post.

Police revealed that a preliminary investigation has already been conducted, and confirmed the validity of the officers’ account of the incident. One of the officers involved, has been put on leave until the investigation has been completed.

Polie Chief Michale Yates said the shooting was “definitely bizarre an defies logic at first glance,” but noted that they are “actively trying to determine” exactly what happened.

Teresa Carter, Chavis’ mother, refutes the notion that her son took his own life, and believe that he was killed by police.

As his story grabs more national attention, a local chapter of the NAACP  has announced plans to hold a candlelight visual in the young man’s honor. Two Facebook pages have been created by residents in Jonesboro, where Chavis resided.

Just before his death, Chavis phoned his girlfriend telling her that he would call back once he was taken to jail, a conversation which drives further doubt into the notion that he planned to take hiS own life.

Chavis was pulled over during a routine traffic stop, but police found that he was in possession of marijuana, and had a warrant out for his arrest stemming from a missed court date. They searched him twice, and never found a weapon, but claim that they must have missed the gun that he allegedly used on himself.
