Plaxico Burress is in trouble with the tax man. The former NFL star owes the state of New York over $59,000 in back taxes stemming from the same season that he won the Super Bowl as a member of the New York Giants. The 34-year-old caught the game-winning touchdown, brutally embarrassing the New England Patriots who were undefeated for the entire season leading up to  Super Bowl XLII.

Back in 2007, Burress’ season base salary was more than $3 million. He will have to settle the $59,241 tax bill to handle a lien filed by the state, for earnings in that year.

Once a top wide-receiver in the league, Burress hit an epic losing streak, after he shot himself inside a New York City nightclub. Given the state’s strict gun laws, he was sent to jail on weapons possession charges, bringing his career to a screeching halt.

He was released from custody last June and played one season for the New York Jets, but is currently a free agent.

In the event that Burress is unable to take care of his debt, he is in fear of having his assets seized.
