Mac Miller’s reputation precedes him. The Pittsburgh rapper was the talk of the indy rap game when his Blue Slide Park release debuted in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard album charts, but going into his sophomore project he’s not so concerned with the numbers game.

Miller sat down with MTV News before taking the stage at New York’s Jones Beach for the Under the Influence tour, where he opened about potentially grabbing the top spot. “Making history was awesome,” he said. “I don’t care about that with this album. I don’t care if we go #1, I don’t care about selling records. That sh– is awesome, but this album, I just need to do something different.”

Ironically, Millers words are a stark contrast from his interview with Billboard, in which he said that secretly he wouldn’t mind staying on top. “I never want [my] albums not to be No. 1,” he said in April. “That’s my expectations for myself.”

For now, Miller’s second album is untitled; but with the buzz surrounding his forthcoming Pink Slime collaboration with Pharrell, his Macadellic mixtape, and his loyal fan following, he might just find himself back at the top of the charts—whether he likes it or not.
