Ronald Weekley Jr. has lawyered up after receiving an unjust beating at the hands of the LAPD this week. The 20-year-old has hired Benjamin Crump, the lawyer gaining national attention for representing the parents of Trayvon Martin.

Weekley, is on medication for a broken nose and cheekbone, and claims to be the victim of police brutality after he was attacked by several  officers near his Venice, Calif. home, Saturday (Aug.18). The incident was recorded by an eyewitness, which shows one officer in particular punching Weekley in the head.

“The next thing I remember is being in the back of the car asking ‘Why me, why did I get stopped?’” Weekley recalled during a press conference. “The officer said because I was a ‘dumb-a’ and that I didn’t stop at the stop sign.”

Crump is thankful that Weekley’s claims are supported by video footage, which he pointed out during the press conference. “How many times did this happen when there are no cellphone recordings of it?”

While the identities of the officers have not been made public, the group was part of a violent crime task force. The LAPD said that Weekley— a student at Xavier University in Louisiana— was stopped for riding his skateboard on the wrong side of the street.

The department is conducting an internal investigation to conclude whether or not the officers used excessive force.
