More than a dozen NYPD officers were the recipients of disciplinary actions after posting racist comments about West Indians on Facebook.In total 17 officers were singled out for the offensive remarks made in reference to last year’s West Indian Day Parade.
Although it took the department a year, officials revealed Thursday (Aug. 23) that the officers will be reprimanded for calling parade attendees “savages,” and “animals,” among other names. Of the 150 comments posted on a Facebook page, investigators were able to identify 20 people as members of the NYPD.
The New York Times was first to make mention of the acts, stating that the officers broke the rules of the department in making “discourteous or disrespectful remarks” about race or ethnicity.
In response to violence at the parade—held during Labor Day weekend—one officer allegedly remarked “Let them kill each other.”
Paul Browne, spokesman for the NYPD, announced that four officers will face departmental trials stemming from charges of misconduct, six cops were given command disciplines, while seven others received lighter punishments.
Marred by a reputation of being discriminatory, several NYPD officers have been involved in racially charged incidents. In late June, Officer Michael Deragjati was sentenced to five years in prison for falsely arresting a Black man, and admitted to being racist.
