While Todd Akin has been getting plenty of negative media for announcing that “legitimate rape” won’t result in a baby, Paul Ryan made similar comments by noting rape as a “method of conception”  but didn’t get nearly as much attention.

Ryan, who is running on the Republican presidential ticket alongside Mitt Romney, is a staunch pro-life supporter and shared why Akin  should step down during an interview, last week. “I gave him my opinion,” Ryan said of his conversation with Akin. “For the sake of the conservative movement I think [Akin stepping down is] the best thing to do in his interest and in the interest of the country.”

Sounds about right, but then things got awkward.

On the topic of abortion, Ryan put his foot in his mouth stating that rape doesn’t change his views on life. “I’m very proud of my pro-life record,” he proclaimed. “I’ve always adopted the idea that the method of conception doesn’t change the definition of life.”

Ryan went on to say that as the “future president,” Romney, will make exceptions in his policy,  for rape and incest cases.

While his words were largely overlooked  by the media, writer Paul Slansky, of the Huffington Post caught wind of Ryan’s statement and was understandably outraged, writing the following:

Wow, right? Talk about a benign euphemism. Rape — RAPE! — is now a “method of conception.” You know, like love-making, just without the love. There could be no greater testament to the utter abdication of responsibility by what passes for a “news” media in America in 2012 than that, despite the grotesquerie of this cavalierly callous comment, chances are better than good that this is the first you’re hearing of it.

Here, watch it — and try to figure out why this has gotten NO MAINSTREAM MEDIA play (not even here at the Huffington Post) despite it being, to my mind, a far more offensive remark than Todd Akin’s imbecilic blurt of last weekend. What, are we tired of stupid remarks about rape now, so Ryan gets a free pass?

Aside from abortion, Ryan has also made news for proposing to turn Medicare into a voucher system.
