An attendee at the Republican National Convention threw nuts at a Black CNN camerawoman and likened her to an animal Tuesday (Aug. 28). The person, whose name has not been released, was removed from the venue in Tampa, Fla. after saying “This is how we feed the animals,” to the woman.
News of the incident broke on Twitter last night, when one-time MSNBC and Current TV anchor David Shuster posted the story writing, “GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying ‘This is how we feed animals.’”
CNN initially did not release a statement on the matter, but later confirmed the account. “CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this afternoon. CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment.”
The convention, which booked singer Wyclef Jean, who pulled out of the gig, was attended by big name politicians like New Jersey Governer Chris Christie, former presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
Mitt Romney was named the Republican candidate for president and will officially accept the nomination with a speech Thursday (Aug. 30). Romney’s wife, Ann, addressed the convention in an attempt to appeal to women voters, and shift the perception of her husband, who has been looked at as being out of touch with average American citizens.
Christie was also on hand to outline why Romney is a better choice for commander in chief than President Obama, but failed to mention the candidate for a full 17 minutes. He has since been criticized for the speech which has been ruled self-centered. “I thought my job last night was to lay out both the stakes in this election and the choice of this election,” he said. “As it turned out, with Mrs. Romney going first, it freed me up to put the choice in even more general terms than I was originally going to do.”
A newly released Gallup Poll shows Romney’s slight lead over Obama with 47 percent of voters having confidence in him, versus 46 percent in favor of the president. The survey was conducted between Aug. 20 and Aug. 26.
