Rihanna may never live down the 2009 attack that left her bloodied and bruised at the hands of Chris Brown, and now the incident has made its way to t-shirts.
A graphic design company based in Leeds, England sold the shirts at the recent Beacons Festival for roughly 20 U.S. dollars each. The shirts feature a photo of Rihanna on the front above the words “I’d Hit That.” The phrase “hit” being a euphemism for intercourse provides for a potential double meaning, but the photo of Brown holding up his fist on the back makes the intended message clear.
Jim DeBarker, writer for the site Louder Than War exposed the shirts, which failed to amuse “a small crowd” of concertgoers that wanted them removed “due to the offense it was causing.”
According to concert officials the shirts were made by the suppliers behind the official merchandise for the event, which contributed to why they were allowed to be sold. DeBarker noted that the merchandise was on sale for the entire weekend, yet organizers said they eventually took them down.
Since the altercation, both Rihanna and Brown have been in contact, collaborated on music, and are re-building their friendship. Rihanna appeared on Oprah’s Next Chapter where she opened up about the aftermath of Brown beating her. “Nobody’s going to say he needs help. Everybody’s going to say he’s a monster without looking at the source … and I was more concerned about him. I lost my best friend,” she said. “Everything I knew switched, switched in a night and I couldn’t control that. It’s not easy for me to understand or interpret, and it’s not easy to interpret on camera, not with the world watching.”
The 24-year-old also admitted to still loving the Virginia native.
