A few years back a gentleman by the name of General Larry Platt took American Idol and its viewers by storm with his ode to saggy jeans, “Pants on the Ground.”  After being remixed a million times on YouTube and accused of plagiarism by another elderly group, it seemed Platt’s cautionary tale had fallen on deaf ears—until now.

Amor “Lilman” Arteaga, is a 9-year-old Brooklyn resident who shares Platt’s disdain for the saggy pants-wearing youth of America.  In “Pull Ya Pants Up,” a song Arteaga co-wrote with his father, he raps, “Think that your swaggin’ cuz your pants sagging? / Pull Ya Pants Up.”

The video has garnered some well-deserved attention as Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is featured in the video, and declared every day in Brooklyn “Pull Ya Pants Up” day.  Arteaga’s song comes on the heels of reports of heightened youth violence in Chicago, where teen rappers like Chief Keef and Lil’ Mouse have been praised for portraying a detrimental lifestyle that many have chosen to follow.  Both Keef and Mouse’s respective songs have since been remixed, and put on a grand stage by artists Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne.

With Arteaga’s message being on the more positive side, we can’t help but wonder if his song will be picked up, or overlooked.  Either way, it’s good to see another side of today’s youth.
