A Michigan woman found herself in trouble with the law for concealing her HIV status. Shalandra Jones is accusing a Dearborn police officer of violating her privacy for ticketing her because he was upset to learn that she has the virus.
Jones and a male driver were pulled over for a broken break light, during a routine traffic stop in August, footage of which recently hit the ‘Net. After getting close to her window, Officer David Lacey, smelled weed coming from the car, and asked both parties to step outside of the vehicle. Jones grabbed her purse, but when the officer saw pills inside, he asked what they were for, and was unhappy with the answer. “That’s probably something you needed to tell me when you got out of the car,” Lacey said before pondering being infected via blood-to-blood contact, had Jones had a sharp object in her possession.
“I had nothing in my purse that would harm him or myself,” she told a local new station.
Even though he didn’t find any sharp objects, Lacey refused to let the matter go unnoticed. “I deal with plenty of crackheads and heroin addicts. Usually they tell me when they got a needle on them. They’ll tell you right away what they got, so that way we don’t get pissed.”
Lacey went on to state that he was doing Jones a favor. “Even though I’m still pissed about the HIV thing, I’m still cutting you guys a break. I’m not taking anyone to jail,” before giving her the ticket which he wouldn’t have done had she revealed her health information beforehand. “If it wasn’t for that, I don’t think I would have wrote anybody for anything.”
Jones, who said that it took her a long time to be able to “come out side” after contracting the virus, has hired an attorney and is seeking to have the ticket dismissed.
The police department is investigating the matter.
