The NYPD is doing its part to clear the wrongfully accused via a $1.25 million grant which will help those unlawfully convicted of crimes. The police unit announced Monday (Sept. 23), that the Innocence Project would spearhead the fight to exonerate inmates and ex-cons found innocent of wrongdoing, by collecting evidence for their cases.

A portion of the funds will also pay salaries for the employees of the non-profit.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly lauded the grant, as a step in bringing justice to those who deserve redemption. “Through this grant, the N.Y.P.D. is proud to join the Innocence Project in its noble work to restore actually innocent persons to society,” he said in a statement.

Investigators will comb through evidence, each of which will be assigned a barcode, so that the information will be forever trackable. Additionally , the grant will allow for  DNA testing performed by the Office of the Chief  Medical Examiner, in s-xual assault and homicide cases.

“Over they years, it’s been very frustrating that evidence couldn’t be located for testing,” said Peter Neufeld, co-director of the Innocence Project. “With these new funds, we are confident that some people will finally receive the justice, they’ve been waiting for.”

According to a national database, over 2,000 wrongfully convicted inmates and ex-cons have been released from prison since 1989, more than 100 of which had been sentenced to death.
