Buzzing rapper/vocalist Azealia Banks found herself under fire after a Netherlands-based “Moombahton” producer took umbrage at the “212” star’s usage of one of his tracks without permission. Producer/DJ Munchi, who has worked with M.I.A., Diplo and Trap-A-Holics, took to Twitter yesterday and unleashed a furious barrage of insults aimed at Banks over the track “Esta Noche” – featured as an upcoming iTunes single and video from the Harlem rapper’s critically acclaimed Fantasea mixtape.
After exchanging a few words on Twitter and behind the scenes, it appeared that a deal could have been struck but Munchi has decided to block the release of the single and video. Just this afternoon, Munchi released an official statement on the matter and explained his side of the situation via Pigeons and Planes.
Munchi on the unauthorized use of the track:
Now the issue comes that I noticed Azealia using the track in her Fantasea mixtape in which the beats were being selected by Diplo and her. Nobody told me anything prior to the release. My intention was never to make this an actual release and I did not like what she did to it.
The only thing I would’ve asked for is proper credits and a say in the creative process – something taboo, but I have to have it clear what I want to affiliate my name with and with what not.
Munchi continued his passionate tirade, saying that Azealia Banks was using the track for “hipster credibility” and refused the $25,000 payout that her camp offered to him. He also remarked on Banks’ earlier feuds with T.I., Iggy Azalea, Jim Jones, and Nicki Minaj.
Banks hasn’t offered much in the way of commentary on the incident, only to playfully jab at Munchi by calling him an “amateur” and lambasting the producer for turning down the 25 large.
It’s a shame they couldn’t work it out the details because, frankly, the track is kind of a heater.
