The sprawling city of Chicago has made national news headlines of late for the violent and rapid spike of gang-related murders – now numbering 320 in 2012 so far. As the inner city strife mars the Windy City’s image, young rappers such as Chief Keef and the late Lil Jo Jo, with the latter of the two supposedly murdered because of reported gang ties, have proudly touted their criminal ways in song and social media.

With a report from a local CBS station surfacing last week, it was clear that the nihilism among youth in the Chicago is a very real and dangerous reality. CBS 2 reporter Walter Jacobson sat down with a group Chicago teens to investigate the impetus behind their gang involvement and to also pick the brains of the young men as to why the uptick in violence has been so prominent. What the newscast reveals is not only sobering, but shocking as well.

During a visit in the gang-riddled Englewood neighborhood, Jacobson’s inquiry was met with blatant indifference. “It’s no solution; killing is the solution,” said one young man in response to the reporter.” Jacobson then pressed the young man, asking if he would take a person’s life. “I never killed before, but if I had a gun in my possession…yeah.”

“We’ve got to eat. We want to. We want money. We want to get fresh; we want fresh J’s almost every day. We want all that,” said another young man. Jacobson interjected, asking if he was accomplishing his goals. The young man bleakly replied, “We tryin’. That’s the key word, we tryin’.”

Over the course of the four-and-a-half minute clip, the group showed that they’re not only remorseless for their role in gangbanging, but also that they’re willingly choosing the gang lifestyle as schoolchildren.

“I chose the gang. I didn’t have to choose anything. I was only 10,” said one of the young men.
