Jesse Jackson Jr. Says He’s “Not Well,” Goes To The Hospital Twice A Day

After months of silence, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has finally opened up about the state of his mental health. The Chicago native has been away from his post for several months, and was receiving treatment for bipolar disorder.

Earlier in  the week came word that Jackson was being investigated by the FBI for misappropriation of official funds, which may have been used to purchase personal items.

In his first interview since going on leave in June, the 47-year-old told The Daily that he’s “not well,” and goes  to George Washington Hospital twice a day to meet with his doctors. “I go over there at 10 [a.m.] and 1 p.m.,” he said.

While he did not address the allegation, and ongoing probe, his father, Jesse Jackson Sr. gave more insight into his condition stating that he’s “just trying to clear his head” and has “been under medical supervision.”

Eyewitnesses in his Washington D.C. neighborhood have also stated that they’ve seen Jackson dining, or just walking outside. “Most of the time he’s talking on his damn phone,” said UPS driver Anthony Short, whose route is in Jackson’s neighborhood. “He has a cigar and is puffing away.”

Given the increased scrutiny into his personal and professional life it comes as no surprise that the father of two has been staying out of the public light. He’s also been experiencing financial problems, and put his home up for sale, to help cover his medical bills.

I have to wonder why the UPS driver’s comment about Jackson being on his phone was included, lots of people talk on phones in public places, and it doesn’t seem to be a problem in the eyes of others unless the person has a mental illness or some sort of disability, then the general public views it as an atrocity for some reason. Living with a mental illness is tough enough without having the media and general public putting you under a microscope. Let’s give the guy a break and let him work on his recovery without having to be scrutinized for smoking a cigar or talking on the phone. Unless everyon putting him under a microscope has a mental illness, there is no way for everyone to even begin to comprehend his struggle. Leave the guy a lone already!
