The presidential election has taken its toll on Mitt Romney’s family. Romney, who went up against President Obama in the second of their three scheduled debates Tuesday (Oct. 16), took a bit of a verbal beating, and his son has come to his rescue.
During an interview with a North Carolina radio station, Tagg Romney explained his response to the president calling his father a liar during the debate. “[You want to] jump out of your seat and you want to rush down to the stage and take a swing at him,” he said before laughing.
“But you know you can’t do that because, well, first because there’s a lot of Secret Service between you and him, but also because that’s the nature of the process.”
Sensing a potential backlash, his father’s camp later clarified that Tagg’s comments were made in jest.
Elsewhere in the interview, Tagg went went on to state that verbal mudslinging is just part of the deal. “They’re gonna try to do everything they can do to try to make my into someone he’s not,” he added. “We signed up for it, we’ve gotta try to kind of sit there and take our punches, and then send them right back the other way.”
In regards to the debates, the result of which can sway voters in either direction, Tagg revealed that his father is “terrified” before going up against the incumbent, then caught himself. “Terrified is too strong a word. but you know, like anybody, he gets butterflies a little bit. And then once he’s in it, two or three minutes, he’s forgotten about the nervousness.”
Although the commander in chief was noticeably more ferocious during their second match held in Hempstead,N.Y., Romney also did his best to rise to the challenge. In the end, many gave the victory to President Obama, who still holds a narrow lead over his opponent. A CNN post-debate poll comprised from 457 registered voters found that Obama won the debate with 46 percent siding with him, ahead of 39 percent with a margin of error at 4.5 point.
Both candidates will meet up again speaking at a charity event in New York Thursday (Oct. 18), before facing off in the third and final debate early next week.
