Chicago’s growing infamy as a result of the violence plaguing the city has been one of the saddest news developments in some time.  Warring gang factions have overrun huge swaths of the Windy City, gripping many persons young and old in fear. In recent weeks newscasters have been investigating the phenomenon, with ABC’s late-night news program Nightline turning a focus on Chicago’s gang culture.

Interscope rap artist, and rumored gang member, Chief Keef is featured in the sobering report titled “Hidden America: Inside Chicago’s Gang War” which aired last week – and several youth involved in or affected by gang violence spoke at length about the growing inner city crisis.

While much of the spotlight has been on Chief Keef as a result of his music, the death of a rival rapper, Lil Jo Jo, and public feud with fellow native Lupe Fiasco has placed the young rapper in a villainous role. Just 17 years of age, Keef’s rise to musical fame is detailed in the report, while his criminal past is mentioned just briefly. Keef’s inclusion in the piece is resonant, however, because of the age of those involved and the recklessness of gang members hurling actual death threats on social media and the like.
