The  East Coast is slowly but surely pulling itself out of the soggy mess leftover by Sandy, but with billions of dollars in damage the efforts will be marathon, not a sprint. New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut felt the brunt of Sandy’s powerful surge, which has closed down public transportation, businesses, and schools.

Sandy has left more than 8 million people without power across 17 states, and caused the death of 50 people in the U.S., a number which is expected to rise in the coming days.

On Tuesday (Oct. 30), President Obama signed documents declaring disaster areas for New York and New Jersey, and is visiting the region to survey the damage, but there is more work to be done. Even with the assistance of FEMA, residents could use support from the public, and for those with the ability to help out, this natural disaster marks a time where volunteerism will be greatly appreciated.
