Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 Tops $500 Million In Sales First 24 Hours In Stores

A lot of people purchased Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 the day it dropped. Activision announced today that the highly anticipated (note: understatement) first person shooter made more than $500 million in sales worldwide on Tuesday, November 13th, its first day in stores.

The figures, which best last year’s Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 24-hour total by $100 millions, are via Chart-Track and company estimates. “With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, Inc. in a press statement. “Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars,” the two most successful movie franchises of all time.  Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013.”

A key to the video game’s launch success was the 16,000 midnight openings are retails locations. At GameStop alone, 1 million copies of Black Ops 2, which retails for $60, were sold in one day.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 is available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 computer and Windows PCs.  On November 18th for the Wii U™ console will be available.
