The pull of addiction is no joke, which is why an Ohio man couldn’t help but ask the judge in his case for one more opportunity to get high.
Judge Melba Marsh gave 19-year-old Damiane Mitchell a break when she sentenced him to rehab instead of jail time Wednesday (Nov. 14), and he thanked her by asking for a last pre-treatment joint.
Mitchell was charged with trafficking the greenery stemming from an incident over the summer where he was spotted selling drugs in a parking lot. The crime carries a maximum sentence of more than a year, but upon his appearance in court, Melba said that she was willing to work with the teen— if he can stay clean.
Successfully completing treatment, would not only allow him to escape jail time, but have the crime removed from his record.
But the deal wasn’t sweet enough.
“That’s going to be hard for me to do, to be honest with you,” Mitchell told the judge. “I like smoking weed. I have been smoking weed since I was like 10 years old.”
Marsh retorted by giving Mitchell deadline’s to when he may be able to break himself of the addiction. “I won’t want to,” he replied. “If I put my mind to it I can, [but] I won’t want to.”
Then he went in for the kill.
“I know this is probably not the right question to ask, [but] can I get a little time at least [to] get one more joint in?”
His request was denied.
“No you can’t have one more joint for old time’s sake,” Marsh replied.
He has been ordered to return to court Monday (Nov. 19), ahead of his scheduled appearance on a trespassing charge, at which point Marsh will decide how to go forward.
