Marvin Gaye was one the greatest and sincerely talented artists of his time, and ever. Rock singer Lenny Kravitz has been tabbed to star as the late singer in a biopic focused on the last years of his short life.

The London Evening Standard reports that Kravitz will play Gaye in a film that at the moment is titled Midnight Love. The film, helmed by British filmmaker Julien Temple, will chronicle Gaye’s life after 1981 and during the recording of his Midnight Love album while Brussels. At the time, Gaye was battling drug addiction.

Shadow and Act, which share plenty of details about what’s been hampering the creation of Gaye biopic, reports that Janis Gaye, the singer’s second and last wife, has been skeptical of the film’s creation. Apparently she is averse to its focus on that dark period of her late husband’s life, while Motown founder Berry Gordy has also prevented any such film from happening.

Another question that much be asked: isn’t Kravitz a little too fair-skinned to play the brown-skinned Gaye? Just consider the drama surrounding Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone in film as a comparative example. On the flip side, Denzel Washington did his thing portraying Malcolm X. Tell us what you think in the comments.

On April 1, 1984, Gaye was shot dead in his bedroom at the hands of his own father. He was 44 years-old.
