As New Yorkers try to recover from the devastation leftover by Hurricane Sandy in time for the holiday season, Tyson Chandler and his wife, Kimberly Chandler, are lending a helping hand. The New York Knick’s center and his better half created the organization Rebound 4 Rockaway/Rebound for New York, to aid in relief efforts.

The super-storm left thousands displaced and the devastation continues as New York residents try to bounce back. One area that is still greatly suffering is the Rockaway section of Queens, NY., the branch of land between Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Most Rockaway residents have returned to their homes but many are still living without heat, appliances, and the health-concerning hazard of black mold growing on their swamping walls. “What’s happening in Far Rockaway is certainly not a quick fix, this is something that’s going to be ongoing God knows for how long, and we just hope that people will continue to come and support the community and help to rebuild it.”

The Chandler’s partnership with Action Center and Hillsong NYC Church helps with food, supplies, and donations as well as fostering help and volunteers.  The NBA star is accepting donations to assist in his charity work, via the website  Tysonchandler.com.

Rockaway has also received helping hands from Chanderl’s teammates Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire.

Watch footage of the couple explaining why they chose to get involved below.
