President Obama will ask Congress for an extra $50 billion to aid in handling the destruction leftover by Hurricane Sandy.

The massive storm struck the East Coast in late October, leaving a path of destruction that is far from being cleaned up.

Sources on Capitol Hill revealed that Obama would request the extra funding, but final figures are still being negotiated, according to Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan. The commander in chief is expected to ask for anywhere from $45-$50 billion in total.

Sandy left much of the New Jersey waterfront, and areas of New York completely wiped away. On Staten Island, residents were still without power weeks after Sandy made landfall.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was said to be asking for $30 billion for his state, to assist as many as 40,000 people who were left homeless post-Sandy.

Obama toured New Jersey and New York twice since Sandy has hit, and in addition to getting funding for relief aid, he’s also dealing with the fiscal cliff. The president recently rejected a Republican “doomsday” offer to extend tax cuts for the middle-class. With less than a month left in the year, the commander in chief is looking to raise taxes on those making more than $250,000 a year, a plan that has been met with opposition.
