Atlanta Buying MLK Papers

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

On Monday, the Atlanta City Council voted to buy and complete a collection of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s papers by using city bonds. Pulling funds from a $40 million tax allocation bond directed to the Center for Civil and Human Rights (CCHR), it will pay off the remaining $11.5 million that is owed for the papers. These papers were originally purchased from King's family three years ago for $32 million.

These documents from King will serve as one of the main attractions for the museum which is presumed to open its doors sometime in 2012. Financial projections have shown $125 million in relation to the actual cost in the entire project. Up to now, $50 million has been paid for.

Doug Shipman, executive director of the center, has stated that he wants to begin construction sometime in 2010 when funds have accumulated to $85 million thanks to commitments. The center is expected to be built in Downtown Atlanta, near the Georgia Aquarium and the new World of Coca-Cola.

Along with the City Council, the CCHR has received support and approval from the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) who were responsible for approving the funds back in August. Cheryl Strickland, managing director of Tax Allocation District at ADA stated that there support is an economic development driver and can only do something positive for the city of Atlanta.

King's collection is compiled of 10,000 pieces of his manuscripts, writings and books. It currently resides at the Robert W. Woodruff Library located at the Atlanta University Center. Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College make up the AUC and have access to these documents. When the final payment is made, the library will continue to hold the papers, but the ownership of King's work will be given to Morehouse College.

The center must consider many variables before building begins. A recent study made by the National Endowment for the Arts showed that 30% of adults went to a museum in 2008 which is drop from 2002 when 40% of people surveyed said they went.

Another variable, of course, is the looming recession taking businesses as victims. Stretching from New York to Washington, various museums have been forced to permanently close their doors due to the economic crisis over the past year. The Georgia Music Hall of Fame, which is located in Macon, is shortly on its way to shutting down if $225,000 cannot be raised by Oct. 27.

Black-Owned Newspaper Fighting Recession

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

The Bay State Banner, Boston, Massachusetts' only Black-owned newspaper, will be taking necessary measures to ensure that the weekly publication does not suffer the fate of many other print businesses that have been shut down.

This publication has served as a vital source for news for the African American community that resides in Boston as its contents are generally geared towards the interest of that particular group. The focus provides coverage on the social, political and economic condition of African American people. It is an independent newspaper that initially surfaced in 1965 by Melvin B. Miller.

According to a recent audit, The Banner has a print circulation of nearly 34,000 and has a readership close to 150,000.

The recession has continued to rear its ugly head and took its toll on The Bay State Banner. As advertising revenue was starting to show a sharp decline, Miller, stated that he was prepared to shut down the paper.

Upon hearing the news of a possible shut down, Harvard University law professor Charles Ogletree began to line up investors that would be another source to make sure that the newspaper was not forced to permanently end its run.

Miller, the publisher and editor of the newspaper, has stated that he will be accepting a $200,000 loan from the city of Boston to aid in its financial struggle and save it from closing up shop. The Boston Local Development Corp., which is a private nonprofit that is administered by the city that provides cash to small businesses, will be providing the loan to The Bay State Banner. The offer was made to Miller by Mayor Thomas Menino last week.

Menino had stated that the loan was an effort to help a business that has become very significant to the minority community. Ironically, the publication reaches out to a community that could be very vital to Menino as he will be up for reelection as mayor.

Aside from print, The Banner also has a Web site which brings in 1 million new visitors each month and has created new publications geared towards diversifying its outlets for revenue. Other publications include Be Healthy which focuses on reducing racial differences through public awareness and Inclusion which is primarily concerned with speaking on diversity.

An upcoming publication, entitled Step Up were recently the recipients of a $50,000 grant awarded by The Boston Foundation in order to highlight the achievements of colored students that are a part of the Boston Public Schools system.

Joe Budden vs. Wu Tang Finally Over???

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

The war of words between Joe Budden and the Wu Tang camp has finally come to a halt even though it was really done a while ago until Inspectah Deck came with “House Ni**a.” Deck and Budden have both stated that they are done going back and forth and pulled away from the battle.

The Jersey rapper issued yet another apology, specifically to Method Man, for the way he approached the “Best Rapper Alive” list and the distasteful way he addressed Meth. He has even stated that he will no longer comment on the situation, for the time being.

Budden has, however, laced a warning to the members of Wu Tang stating that he will bear (more...)

C-Murder Trial Postponement Denied

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

A Federal judge denied prosecutors a postponement for C-Murder's murder trial. Judge Hans Liljeberg ruled Monday that prosecutors will not have the extra time requested to investigate new testimony from his friend and fellow inmate Juan Flowers.

As previously reported, C-Murder is charged with second degree murder for the death of 16 year-old, Steve Thomas at a night club back on January 12 of 2002. He was convicted in 2003 but awarded a new trial for complications with witnesses. Flowers, who is serving a life sentence in Georgia for murder suddenly confessed last week to killing Thomas. His sudden confession disputes the testimony from a witness at the scene that heard Flowers say, “No one could see C. Miller shoot that (more...)

The King Of Rock DMC Calls For Rappers To Take Responsibility For Their Words

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

The legendary Darryl "DMC" McDaniels of Run-DMC was in Atlanta last week and had few interesting points to make about the current state of Hip-Hop and how rappers have to take responsibility for their actions. Not being preachy or coming off as an old head, DMC told Frank Ski and Wanda Smith from Atlanta's V-103's Frank & Wanda Morning Show that his mission still is and has always been about empowering the youth through Hip-Hop. He stated:

“Now I'm trying to school the entertainment business. We have to realize we were put in these positions for a reason…I was given the foundation of Hip Hop. I was given the foundation of Hip Hop and what Run DMC did. People said, man, Run DMC wasn't just a rap group to us, it wasn't just about music…We changed relationships, we changed perception, we changed business, we changed fashion. So for me I have a responsibility, so what happened was, I said if I do die tomorrow, people know (more...)

Busta Rhymes Inks New Publishing Deal

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

As most rappers are becoming fed up with neglect coming from their record labels, many are packing their bags and beginning to go towards the independent route.
