The Great Debaters College In Danger Of Closing

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Located in Dallas, Texas, the HBCU Paul Quinn College has lost its accreditation and is on the brink of closing its door permanently after holding it down for the past 137 years.

For those that don't know, the HBCU was the school featured in the biographical film The Great Debaters with Denzel Washington in 2007.

To those that are unaware, when a school loses accreditation, students are still able to attend the university or college. In Texas, however, although this point is still intact, the schools are unable to award diplomas to the students and they cannot receive federal or state financial aid.

This school of higher learning enrolls close to 440 students and credits itself with being the oldest HBCU in Texas.

On June 25, it was reported that the small college had lost its accreditation and was in danger of going through the process of being shut down as a result of financial problems and other variables. The college was given a time period of 10 days to appeal the decision by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Belle Wheelman, president of the organization, made reference to numerous variables which caused the decision to be made. The private liberal arts school's debt and a lack of funding, planning, assessment and student learning were all factors cited by Wheelman. The school did not meet the standards for financial stability and assessments of outcomes for achievement which resulted in the final outcome.

Paul Quinn filed a notice on Monday that it will be appealing the decision that took away its accreditation. It was given a boost of encouragement, and will receive a pledge of $1.5 million by the close of August from the state's Legislative Black Caucus. Paul Quinn School President Mike Sorrell stated that the funds would be able to help the college maintain the structure and provide it with the ability to last in the long run.

Sorrell had taken over at the driver's seat at Paul Quinn around 2007 after it had already mounted various problems with enrollment being down and an endowment that shrunk less than $5 million. He immediately wanted to change the school's image and tried to implement things such as a dress code, mandatory class attendance and cutting the Tiger's football program. This saved close to $600,000 a year. Not even this was enough to keep the school going.

Texas Rep. Helen Giddings was responsible for pushing a meeting to be held Monday with the Black Caucus members, Quinn College leaders and others that are involved with the education process in Texas. Although she did not attend the school, she stated that some family members had previously taught there.

With the appeal being made, Paul Quinn can now hold on to its accreditation till its hearing in mid-August, according to accrediting agency's guidelines.

In the fall, Paul Quinn College will be resuming classes and is expected to have 250 new freshmen, according to school officials.

Child Support for a Childless Man?

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Frank Hatley, having spent a year in jail for falling back in child support payments, was finally released from his sentence on Wednesday. The twist to the matter is the fact that Hatley actually doesn't have any children.

With aid from the Southern Center for Human Rights, Hatley was released from the Cook County jail in south Georgia after his hearing. Last June, Hatley was imprisoned by the court for failing to make necessary payments to support his alleged son.

His attorney, Sarah Geraghty, filed a motion for the release of his client stating that he is a hard-working man that has showed his commitment to paying what was owed to the court even using his unemployment checks to ensure the funds were repaid.

The child in question stemmed from a relationship that Hatley had with Essie Lee Morrison when she became pregnant and birthed a son. Morrison told him that the child was his, but the relatio0nship came to an end after the child was born.

When her son turned 2 she applied for public support for her son and under Georgia law it is established that the state has the ability to seek the parent that is not the actual guardian of the child. As a result, Hatley made payments to the state for 13 years.

In 2000, however, questions arose to whether the child was actually his biological son and through DNA testing Hatley learned that the child was not his own, according to court documents. Although this new knowledge ceased any further payments that would be owed to the court, Hatley was still ordered to pay back $16,000 to the state that he owed before presenting the new findings to the court.

Although he tried to make payments, certain variables placed him behind bars. In 2006 he was placed in prison when he fell behind in payments which could have been due to him being unemployed at the time.

Hatley can be considered a victim of circumstances. His attorney at that time, Latesha Bradley, stated the only reason he would have to continue with the back payments even though it was evident that the child was not his, he had signed a consent agreement with the child support offices and the court agreed that he would be held accountable for the time that he believed that was his son.

After being released and making payments again he found himself jobless again in 2008 and even became homeless. As a result he was jailed again for failure of payments.

Hell, speaking of child support, Nas might need to take a lesson and make sure everything is correct before you start dealing with the same problem.

South African Court Clears R. Kelly's Name in Scam

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

R. Kelly does a lot of questionable things, but he does not scam money. That's the claim of a regional court in South Africa. The court declared Wednesday that R. Kelly will not have to testify in an investment scam case. A woman from Durban South Africa, Busisiwe Priscilla Zakwe, made a claim that she and R. Kelly were working together in scamming high end people out of money. She was arrested in 2005 for swindling investors out of thousands of dollars. She assured them that they would benefit from an R. Kelly concert if they paid enough to bring him to that area.

Of course there was no upcoming concert so he never showed. In a blatantly obvious lie, the woman claimed that (more...)

New Zealand Cops Waiting To Harass The Game

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

It is no secret that The Game has had more than a few brushes with the boys in blue over the years. From weapon's charges to drug possession, Jayceon Taylor has not met a law, or a cop, that he has liked yet. Thus far, his police stigma has been contained to stateside offenses, but in an effort to reach out to his fans across the pond, the Compton heavyweight could potentially wet his voracious criminal appetite and by expanding his list of offenses to include a few (more...)

Lloyd Banks Sets Sights On Reality TV

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Undoubtedly the most loyal member of Gorilla Unit, Lloyd Banks, is working to revitalize his seemingly shell shocked career, unofficially of course. He has recently revealed an interest in expanding his brand, possibly traversing across the musical plane into mainstream success, possibly making use of a reality show to accomplish that feat.

Having amicably split from Interscope Records, the label-less MC sees the boob tube as a way to both, make money and stay relevant, at the same time. “We are in talks right now for my own reality show. . . If that becomes a go then I'll definitely take that approach. You'll definitely see me on the (more...)
