Gravediggers Digging Up Bodies

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Three gravediggers and a cemetery manager have dug up bodies from their graves at a historical Black cemetery located south of Chicago. They are currently facing felony charges.

According to authorities, more than 100 graves have been dug up.

The group, allegedly lead by the former manager, developed a scheme where they would be able to make a profit, off the books, through selling grave plots. According to authorities, they dug corpses from their graves and dumped them in weeded areas or double-stacked the bodies in other graves.

The suspects, all of whom are unfortunately Black, were identified as Carolyn Towns, 49, Keith Nicks, 45, and Terrence Nicks, 39, all from Chicago, and Maurice Dailey, 61, of Robbins, IL. They each have been charged with one count of dismembering a human body.

Authorities added that Towns had pocketed donations that were meant for an Emmett Till memorial museum. She has yet to be charged with those allegations, but it has been documented that she was fired from the cemetery in late May with ongoing allegations that she was involved in financial wrongdoing

Investigations began close to six weeks ago when a call was received from the owners of the cemetery, according to Cook County authorities. A groundskeeper had reported that skeletal remains were found in areas they weren't suppose to be.

Families have scrambled in search of the graves of their family members located at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois. Some have ventured to find that their relative's graves were untouched, but unfortunate others were unable to find the bodies of their deceased family members.

Sheriff Tom Dart stated that most of the excavations happened in the back lots as the plots were older and weren't frequently visited.

This cemetery is the resting place for people such as Emmett Till, blues singers Wiilie Dixon and Dinah Washington and some Negro League baseball players. According to groundskeepers, the grave site of Till, who was lynched at the age of 14 which aided in the spark for the civil rights movement, has not been disturbed.

Authorities have been placed in quite a bind as they are now forced to locate the families who are unaware and inform them that their relative's body was removed from their grave. They must also track down the people who purchased these plots under the influence that they were vacant.

The cemetery manager, Towns, has had a bond set for $250,000. The other three have a bond set at $200,000.

Massachusetts Sues the U.S. Governement Over Gay Rights

Friday, July 10th, 2009

On Wednesday, Massachusetts sued the U.S. government and challenged the moral rights of a federal law that defined marriage as just being a bond between a man and a woman.

On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize gay marriage. It will also be the first state to step up and challenge the law.

Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, in March, sued the federal government over Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. This group also argued in support for same-sex marriage back in 2003.

The lawsuit made against the government argues that the Defense of Marriage Act, which became a law in 1996, denies same-sex couples necessary rights and protections along with giving federal recognition. Rights that are denied include federal income tax credits, employment and retirement benefits, health insurance coverage and Social Security.

The Defense of Marriage Act, which was established in 1996, started when the Hawaii State Supreme Court ruled that the state must demonstrate a legitimate interest in banning same-sex marriage. Opponents of same-sex marriage became concerned that the state would legalize it and others would follow in accordance in recognizing same-sex marriages. The act was specifically designed to segregate these marriages and prevent other states from being required to recognize them as being legitimate unions.

Filed by state Attorney General Marth Coakley, there are claims that the Defense of Marriage Act forces the state to go against its same-sex married couples which is estimated to be 16,000. The lawsuit has also claimed that the law pushes the state into treating same-sex and opposite-sex marriages differently when it pertains to determining Medicaid benefits. It has even become a factor in determining if spouses of veterans will be permitted to be buried in a veteran's cemetery.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and the federal government are just a few that will be defendants as they were all named in the suit.

After Massachusetts, same-sex marriage has become legal in Iowa, Maine and Connecticut. New Hampshire and Vermont will join the group as soon as it becomes legal later in the year or by the beginning of 2010.

Bill Clinton To Become A Sigma???

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

The men of Phi Beta Sigma are hosting their National Conclave this week in New Orleans, Louisiana and according to sources within the fraternity, a vote by several members of the brotherhood will see some very influential men voted into their ranks very soon. Former President and notorious philanderer William Jefferson Clinton was the first voted on; he won by a nearly unanimous vote. The other was the man with the prodigious perm, infamous rabble-rouser, Reverend Al Sharpton.

Leadership of Phi Beta Sigma have not officially confirmed this information as of yet, but the rumors hearken to familiar tones that were uttered nearly a year ago, when rumors surfaced that the distinguished ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha were preparing to induct First Lady Michelle Obama into their sisterhood. The rumors became truth when she was later given an honorary membership into the sorority, joining the ranks of a myriad of distinguished women and just one former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt.

If former President Clinton becomes a member of Phi Beta Sigma he will become the first President of the United States to become a member of a historically Black Greek lettered organization.
