Two Chicago Men Are Free After Wrongfully Imprisoned 20 Years Ago

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Two Chicago men are free after spending twenty years in jail for a crime they did not commit. According to the Illinois Attorney General's Office, charges were dropped against 42-year old Ronald Kitchen and 50-year old Marvin Reeves. After a re-investigation of the case it was determined that there was a lack of credible evidence to keep the men in jail. Ronald Kitchen was in disbelief of his freedom.

“It really hasn't hit me yet. It's, like, surreal. And I guess when I actually sit down and take a hot bath. It might hit me then.”

Kitchen and Reeves were convicted of killing two women and three children in 1988. Kitchen was sentenced to death and Reeves was sentenced to five life terms. Reeves was tortured into giving a confession by former crooked police detective, John Burge and crew.

Burge is notorious for beating more than 200 suspects into forced confessions from 1972 to 1991. The detective beat Reeves in the head with a telephone, punching him in the face and kicking him in the groin. Burge is awaiting trial on lying about torturing suspects; he has more than 20 cases of torture under investigation.

ATL Police Ordered To Release Records Regarding Unjustifiable Police Murders

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

The Atlanta police department was ordered to release records to a citizen board reviewing the shooting death of 92 year old Kathryn Johnston and unarmed robbery suspect Pierre George Tuesday morning. However in a failed attempt to cover their ass, The International Brotherhood of Police Officers, an Atlanta police union, filed a lawsuit Monday morning trying to halt the release of the records to the citizen board. Unfortunately for the police union they were too late, the police department already turned over the files. The executive director of the board, Christina Beamud, confirmed that the files had already been turned over:

“It seems to me their request was brought too late.”

Fulton County Superior Court Judge, Wendy Shoob didn't buy the late request from the police union and quickly dismissed it Wednesday. The lawyer for the union David Beall disagreed with her decision, saying that the documents should not be released until the police's internal investigation is complete:

“The release of these documents could jeopardize the integrity of the investigation and the officers' rights, the DA's office is still investigating this and there may be criminal charges brought.”

Justice Shoob also questioned why the police hadn't conducted internal investigations on two cases that were three years old.

The citizen board reviewing the case was formed in 2007 after the death of Kathryn Johnston. She was killed by Atlanta police in 2006 when they illegally broke into her home looking for drugs. Fearing that she was being robbed, Johnston grabbed her gun and met police at the door where she was gunned down. Three former officers are serving prison sentences for their role in the shooting.

Pierre George was killed by Atlanta police in December. He was unarmed but was shot fatally in the chest reaching for his waistband. Police say George and another man kidnapped a pedestrian at gunpoint and stole a vehicle.

Joe Budden Plans To Tear Inspectah Deck Apart

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Clearly Wu Tang member Inspectah Deck did not get the memo that beef was beginning to settle with the tension between Joe Budden and the group from Staten Island. He has released a diss track titled, “House Ni**a” and tried to completely discredit the Jersey rapper and almost make him come off as an irrelevant.

Outside of Budden's character, he makes reference to his current girlfriend Tahiry stating that people only check for him just so they can check for his girl and her assets. Another stone was thrown in the form of the aftermath of Budden's relationship with Gloria Velez saying that he was obsessed to the point where (more...)

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

The trial for Miami rapper Pitbull began yesterday in Miami, Florida over a DUI charge and if convicted, he could be faced with prison time.

Man Sentenced To Life For Murder of NY College Student

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Darryl Littlejohn, 44, has dug his own grave and has now been sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the murder of a graduate student from Boston, according to the Brooklyn district attorney's office.

Convicted Wednesday, Littlejohn was charged with first-degree murder last month in a case that spanned back to 2006 which lead to the death of Imette St. Guillen, 24, who studied at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Witnesses present at the trial stated they saw both Littlejojn and St. Guillen departing from The Fall bar in Manhattan on February 25, 2006 where Littlejohn worked as a bouncer. Only hours later from this encounter, her body was found nude, wrapped in a blanket, and her face was bound by packing tape with a sock shoved down her throat. Her body was left in a lot in Brooklyn. Investigators were able to determine that she died of asphyxiation and showed evidence of being beaten and raped.

Before the actual sentencing the court heard from her older sister, Alejandra and mother, who told held their accounts of a sister and a daughter and how this is one hard time that she will not be able to get them through.

DNA that was compared to blood on the plastic ties used to restrain the woman was able to link Littlejohn to the crime. This evidence was sufficient for investigators to charge the man with the murder.

To make matters even worse, Littlejohn was already serving a sentence of 25 years to life for an attempted kidnapping in October 2005 of a Queen's college student. This woman, fortunately, was able to escape.

Both sentences will be served consecutively, according to Sarah McNaughton of the Brooklyn district attorney's office.

Joyce David, the attorney of Littlejohn, is in the process of filing an appeal and has continued to state that her client is innocent. This adds reason as to why Littlejohn did not issue an apology after being convicted. Although it may be true that he has an extensive criminal background, she stated that none of these criminal activities included abuse towards women. His defense believes that their client has been framed in a cover-up and has placed the murder on the manager of the bar.

The death of St. Guillen, along with various other bar incidents, has placed pressure on nightlife security and it has started become a requirement to have cameras and implement new methods to improve security.

The family of St. Guillen has hired a lawyer intending to sue Littlejohn for the $750 thousand that he had recently inherited.

Currently, Littlejohn has been imprisoned at Riker's Island.

Update: McNair Murdered By Lover

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

In further investigation of the murder of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair, the case has been ruled as a murder-suicide.

Police have stated that Sahel Kazemi, 20, the girlfriend of McNair shot him in his right temple and then placed three more shots into him. Due to a lack of defensive wounds, they added that it probably happened as he was sleeping on the couch.

After killing McNair, Kazemi allegedly sat on the couch and staged it so that when she shot herself in the head, her body would lay out into his lap. Police Chief Ronal Serpas of Nashville, Tennessee, stated that there was a trace of gunshot residue that was found on her left hand. The gun used was a 9 mm handgun.

The weapon was purchased on Thursday evening, according to police, by Kazemi. Prior to the purchase she was also pulled over and charged with a DUI while she was accompanied by McNair.

According to the police chief, Kazemi had started to become quite panicky as the week had progressed having thoughts that McNair was having an affair with another woman. Kazemi allegedly had seen another person leave the condominium that was rented which only added on to her initial suspicion. Detectives became aware of the fact that Kazemi had followed a woman home that she suspected was romantically involved with McNair, but a confrontation did not ensue.

Along with this concern she was also becoming distraught about financial issues that were stacking up. Through interviews, it was discovered through friends that she was making payments on two vehicles and the amount of her rent had doubled. Serpas added that she had told friends that she wanted to end it all because her life was messed up. Mentally Kazemi was clearly starting to quickly unwind and spinning out of control.

In regards to a possible third party, there has been no evidence found that would show that any other person was present during their death.

Swimming Pool Boots Black Children For “Changing Its Complexion”

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Instances of minor racial skirmishes and extreme racial intolerance have risen greatly since the election of America's first Black President. From the eastern seaboard to the west coast, Black people and African-Americans have been on the receiving end of what some would suggest is a symbolic beating. Police brutality is at an all-time high as civil unrest fuels racially motivated injustices in nearly every community. No person of color is safe. Not even children.

Tuesday presented more than sixty children from Northeast Philadelphia with their first brush with racism after they were turned away from a private swim club for seemingly no reason at all. The sixty children were all a part of The Creative Steps Day Camp, an organization that offers recreational and educational opportunities for youths during summer months. The group paid $1,900 to The Valley Swim Club, which operates as a private entity but advertises openly in public, for the opportunity to swim in their pool.

“Open” is hardly what the club is; firsthand accounts by Horace Gibson, a parent-guardian that works with Creative Steps, reveals the type of bigotry and intolerance exhibited by the swim club and their staff. "When the minority children got in the pool, all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool. The pool attendants came and told the Black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately,” recalled Gibson in an email.

Valley Swim Club offered to refund all monies paid by Creative Steps to the camp's director, Aetha Wright, who immediately turned down the refund in what some might see as a symbolic gesture. When asked for the reason that she chose that particular course of action, Wright said that, “The parents don't want the refund. They want a place for their children to swim.”

With the camp nearly $2,000 poorer and parents still awaiting an apology of some kind, it was the hope of those whom were wronged that a feasible reason for the entire ordeal could be given. Those hopes were dashed almost as quickly as the children were kicked out of the pool as the president of the Valley Swim Club delivered the club's reasoning.

"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club," said John Burwell, president of the Valley Swim Club, in a statement that was either shockingly politically incorrect or worded horribly.

Abraham J. Herschel once said that: “Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason.”

I can't think of many 21st century examples that add more validity to his legendary quote than this. . .

NCAA Championship Leaves South Carolina Due To Confederate Flag

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

In a blow that will leave an indelibly powerful mark on the economy of South Carolina, the National Collegiate Athletic Association has decided to pull their annual basketball championship out of South Carolina over the obvious racial tension associated with an old state practice. For decades, the Confederate Flag has flown high about South Carolina's state capitol and other state government office buildings. Supporters of the flag cite its historical significance as the reason that it rises on the flagpoles of South Carolina's most important buildings; ironically, many South Carolinians object to it for nearly the exact same reason.

The degradation, pain, and injustice associated with the “good ol' Stars & Bars” is shared by countless Black residents of the first state to secede from the Union. It is because of those negative connotations that the NCAA and the Atlantic Coast Conference found that it was necessary to strip the state of their right to host a trilogy of collegiate basketball championships, effectively taking millions of dollars away from the state.

The ACC previously awarded the tournament to Myrtle Beach from 2011 to 2013. The decision drew widespread criticism from the NAACP, which was engaging in a full fledge boycott of the state because of its insistence on flying the flag of the Confederacy from the state's capitol. Commissioner John Swofford says the tournament was awarded to Myrtle Beach with the understanding that discussions were held with groups that had sensitivities regarding the flag, but that “it has become clear this was not the case.”

North Carolina was chosen as a suitable replacement for the tournament, as Raleigh will host the ACC Championship in 2011 and 2013 while Greensboro has hosting duties for 2012.

North Korea Tries To Hack Into The White House

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Does it ever stop?! North Korea is back in the news again! This time, North Korea is suspected of trying to disable and hack into the White House and other U.S. intelligent websites. Also cyber attacked were eleven South Korean websites. According to South Korea's spy agency the National Intelligence Service,

“An organization and possibly a state were behind the attacks Tuesday in South Korea, the world's most wired nation, and there were signs of meticulous preparation for the act.”

The South Korean News Agency, Yonhap, confirmed that the spy agency believes North Korea is responsible.

“Malicious programs were found targeting 26 U.S. and South Korean websites, including that of the White House.”

The attackers did their best to jam the websites by overwhelming their data capacity and knocking them out of service. The attack did affect the U.S. websites of the Treasury and Transportation departments, the Secret Service and the Federal Trade Commission.

This adds to the increasing tension between the U.S. and North Korea, after the city of Pyongyang's nuclear test in May, and it's firing of ballistic missiles despite being told not to.

Someone get Kimmy (Kim Jong Il) and tell him to get his people, please. Attacking the most wired and the most powerful nations in the world? Not a good idea…North Korea's turning into that annoying fly buzzing around that won't go away, and we all saw what Obama does to flies. I'm just saying, buzz off North Korea! Obama don't play that…
