Teen Charged For “Trae Day” Shooting

NEWS

19-year-old Albert Walker Mondane has decided to end the search as he has turned himself into authorities in connection with the shootings that occurred last month at Texas Southern University. The event, which took place on July 22, was meant to pay homage to Houston-rapper Trae therefore it was known as Trae Day.

According to Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith, Mondane, also known as "A-Walk," surrendered to authorities last Friday. He has been charged with engaging in organized criminal activity and now resides in the Houston city jail with a bail amounted at $30,000.

Although captured, police have stated that he is only one of the several suspects that were responsible for the chaos at the event that ended with eight people being injured. A witness account stated to the authorities that a vehicle drove by the event and someone began to open fire onto the crowd in the parking lot. TSU police initially suspected that the incident was gang related, but due to insufficient evidence, this idea cannot be further developed and proven.

The rapper Trae was unharmed in the altercation as his publicist, Nancy Byron, stated that he had left the event and did not witness the actual incident. She added that the shooting had nothing to do with him or anyone that affiliated themselves with him.

Trae expressed him discontent with the shooting and spoke out against those responsible and stated that the shooters were “cowards” as described in My Fox News:

"You don't jeopardize kids. You don't jeopardize families like that," Trae said in an interview. "A lot of cats out here will say they are real, but you don't do that kind of stuff." Trae also called the shooters "cowards." He also emphasized the shooting took place after the event ended and those involved were packing up.”

Although all of the victims were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries, none of them were fatally wounded.

Even with the madness that encompassed the event, which was created last year, it was, overall, a success. “Trae Day” featured games and rides for the children, food and drinks, and free live performances by names such as Rick Ross, Bun B and Hurricane Chris. It also helped to promote children to stay in school as there were free school supply giveaways. The event also gave free HIV/STD tests and immunizations.
