Struggling HBCUs Move to Internet

Friday, August 21st, 2009

In trying to survive during such harsh times, it has become necessary to take particular measures. For historically black college universities, the struggle has led one to provide higher education through means of online classes.

Morris Brown, once an acclaimed faction of the Atlanta University Center which includes the likes of Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College has been going through trials ever since losing its accreditation in 2002 and has held on tight to stay afloat. A solution for now has been for the school to launch an Internet-based degree program in organizational leadership and management. According to President Stan Pritchett, these classes will be available to students as soon as next week.

Pritchett reflected on the downward spiral that the school has gone through since 2002 as the loss of accreditation resulted in a sharp decline in student enrollment which manifested itself negatively as it made it more difficult for the college to maintain themselves financially. Troubles built up to the point where the water was turned off last year because of a bill that had been unattended to.

Online classes will be similar to actual in-class schooling in the way that tuition will be paid. Room and board will not be paid of course as well as other expenses that would be needed if staying on-campus. Morris Brown will provide the students with online books and a means to communicate with their professors through an online platform.

According to Ben Chavis, co-founder and president of Education Online Services Corporation, Morris Brown will be the pioneer for HBCUs in offering this online program. Starting with Brown, the company hopes to establish the same programs with other HBCUs as time progresses.

Gold Digging Kelis Hits Up Nas For More Stacks

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Mere weeks after being awarded a judgment that would have rapper Nas pay over $44,000 a month in child support, Kelis has chosen to return to court with the hope that she will be able to convince the court to increase her payment amount. According to official court papers that were filed by Kelis' attorney Laura Wesser, the singer feels that she is entitled to more money, saying that Nas supposedly makes around $244,826 a month.

Wesser also asserts that Kelis only brings in around $13,744 a month, making her solely dependent on her ex-husband's income to maintain her lifestyle. The "Milkshake" crooner is requesting that a judge authorize a payout increase from Nas that would see her receive $17,225 a month in child support, $72,728.00 in spousal support, retro child support of $29,522.00, and retro spousal support of $281,571. That would mean she would rake in a total of $401,076.00 while still receiving $44,000 that was ordered on her behalf a month ago.

Clark Atlanta University Grad Sells Himself on eBay

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Desperate times have called for desperate measures and some people will go through extremes in order to accomplish a goal. In the case of Clark Atlanta University alumni, Terrance Wyatt, he has decided to place stock in himself as he places himself on eBay and selling himself for $10,000.

Such a drastic move seems to have come from a man that may have felt that his back was firmly pressed against the wall as he was eighteen credits shorts of graduating and was one that was not privileged to receive an abundant amount of financial aid along with the university not being the place to look for in terms of receiving the necessary funds. At this point it seems as though Wyatt, 23, has looked to all of his resources and this is the last option he feel has been presented with.

As far as the actual ad that he presented to potential buyers, which has since been pulled by eBay, Wyatt issued this:

“I am in the last year of my master's of business administration program here at Clark Atlanta University. As many of you, I have become a victim of the recession (a depression to some of us) in our wonderful country and I am in danger of losing everything I have worked for in the brief 23 years of my life. The root of my problem stems from not being able to cover all of the tuition in the final year of my pursuit of higher education. I am short about $10,000 of realizing a lifelong dream.

I am a first generation college student in my family. My mother did not finish high school but she did the best she could in raising me under the circumstances. I haven't seen my father since I was 7 years old. Although being raised in poverty, and around drugs and violence; by the grace of God, I overcame my surroundings and graduated in the top 10% of my high school class (2004).

So I am willing to offer you a piece of my future. I am an aspiring hedge fund manager, social activist, and entrepreneur. I am offering to give the person that is willing to help me now, a percentage of everything that is soon to come in my life. This investment in my future right now could potentially pay off to be millions for you if I have my way.

I can verify everything I have said. I am not trying to scam or lie to anyone. I just want to graduate this year and break the cycle of self-destruction and poverty in my family once and for all.

As far as being a benefactor of my future earnings, we can have the documents customized to your liking by the firm of your choosing (or mine if you would like) to insure you will be entitled to future compensation from any of my future earnings and business ventures. You will also receive a thank you card and a personal note of gratitude as an immediate item.”

Man, times are hard.

Drake Speaks On Official Release Of "So Far Gone" Mixtape

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Young Money's rapping-acting sensation, Drake, is riding high on his success. His most successful mixtape to date, So Far Gone, hard-pressed him to Hip-Hop's frontline particularly with his top Billboard single, “Best I Ever Had.” Originally released for free download in February on his blog, OctobersVeryOwn.blogspot.com, the successful mixtape is now set to hit shelves nationwide in September complete with bonus tracks not featured on the original.

Drizzy explained his reasoning for putting the album in stores in a post entitled, “Unlearn,” on his blog. He allows fans a peak into his mindset, wondering if any artist would live up to the old standards of past Hip-Hop legends without the push of the Internet.

“I often wonder in a time where new artists exist in a impersonal cyber world of instantaneous information, if we will ever have another rap legend that can manage to maintain the image that our idols had prior to this (more...)

Michelle Obama Named One of Forbes' Most Powerful Women

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Michelle Obama has weathered the storm of criticism over shoes, shorts and bold statements about the nation, but in the end, the FIrst Lady always shines with ease and grace. Once again, Mrs. Obama caught the spotlight Thursday when she snagged the No. 40 slot on the Forbes 100 list of the most powerful women in the world.

"Not only is she a First Lady, she's the first African-American First Lady and that accords her a certain amount of power," said Heidi Brown, a ForbesWoman staffer who had a hand in creating the list.

Brown said when a candidate is chosen, they take into account the amount of attention she receives, and it is no secret the media is enchanted with Michelle Obama.

"She's done a lot to get her message out," Brown said. "She's been effective at reaching out not only to the media, but to regular people as well."

Trailing behind the First Lady are other female members of the Obama administration, with the exception of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who took the 36th spot, which is down from the 28th position she occupied during her presidential campaign.

Homeland Security guru, Janet Napolitano scored the 51st position, SEC chief Mary Shapiro took slot 55 and head of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius took the 56 slot.

The newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor also made the list in position 54.

Cosby Fights for PA Public Schools

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

America's favorite father, Bill Cosby, joined Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell at a news conference Wednesday to back his cause for funding of public schools in the state.

The two applauded the improvements that the schools have already made in the standardized test scores in math, reading and blasted the Republicans' notion to cut funding to public schools more than the Democratic governor has pledged.

According to the Associated Press, Cosby, a Philadelphia native, opened and ended his short speech with "No more cuts!"

He said taxpayers should feel as though they're investing in a worthy cause: education. He pointed out the fact he costs less than $5000 to educate a child but $33,000 a year to incarcerate an adult.

Man Gets $632K for Wrongful Conviction

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

A Virginia man, Arthur Whitfield, spent 22 years of his life imprisoned for two rapes he never committed, and for his time spent, he will get more than $632,000 in restitution, after a unanimous decision by state lawmakers on Wednesday.

Whitfield, 54, was sentenced to 63 years in prison in 1982. In 2004, however, DNA tests proved his innocence and he was freed, reports BlackLegalIssues.com.

In order to acquire the money due, Whitfield had to provide paperwork stating his innocence called "writ of actual innocence," however, that particular document was only legally valid for those who are incarcerated at that time. The Virginia Supreme court could not issue such documentation.

Whitfield's only chance at the restitution was a pardon from Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, but it was stalled because one of the rape victim's opposed the pardon, keeping Whitfield from his due process for months.

"When we have a victim who continues to assert that the individual is guilty, we obviously had to take some time and make sure we had that right," Kaine said Wednesday

Whitfield, who has been working in a produce factory, has recently been diagnosed with lever cancer and did not attend the legislative session Wednesday because he was getting a chemotherapy treatment, his lawyer Michael Fasanaro confirmed.

Although Whitfield is employed, he still struggles financially.

"I'm delighted that we've finally gotten some commitment from the state to pay him some money," Fasanaro said

Whitfield will receive a lump sum of around $127,000 and will be paid the remainder each year.

"This guy holds no grudges," Fasanaro said. Whitfield had hoped to get all the money at once so he could buy a house. He currently lives in an apartment, and his father drives him to work.

"He's afraid that he's still going to have to work, and he's not going to be able to much longer" because of his health, Fasanaro said.

Sen. Kenneth Stolle, R-Virginia Beach, pushed for restitution after learning this summer that Whitfield had not been compensated for his time behind bars.

"I was extremely amazed at the fact that this guy holds no grudges against the community or the victims," Stolle said. "He probably regrets what happened, but he is completely happy with being out of prison and is not asking for anything."
