Venus & Serena In Talks To Purchase Stake In Miami Dolphins

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

The Miami Dolphins have embarked on a quest that would have their ailing franchise rise from the fiery lake of oblivion, inhabited by only the worst of NFL teams, and rejuvenated as an AFC powerhouse to be reckoned with.

New team owner Stephen Ross is doing everything he can to take his biggest investment to the top, and in doing so, is allowing some of the world's top notch names in sports and entertainment to come along for the ride. Jimmy Buffett, Gloria and Emilo Estefan, and Marc Anthony are but some of the big names tapped to purchase minor ownership shares in the team, all in the name of raising the franchise's public profile by combining it with star power.

As big as those names are, they still pale in comparison to the latest addition to the teams expanding roster of celebrity stake holders. Tennis prodigies, Venus and Serena Williams have thrown their names in the ring, and will take a stake in the South Florida football franchise.

Though not yet officially confirmed, the Williams Sister's involvement in this landmark undertaking underscores the obvious racial tensions that involve minorities in NFL front offices. There has never been a Black majority owner in the history of the league. The unparalleled move adds validity to the effort that Ross is putting into showing the diversity found within Miami as a community, represented via the team that serves as an ambassador for the world to the rest of the nation and world.

While speaking on the deal, Serena Williams expressed a less holistic view, saying, "There's always so many opportunities out there, and Venus and I are always trying to expand our brand and do the best that we can do. And if an opportunity presents itself, we would love to see where it can take us. Who knows what's going to happen, but hopefully we'll be able to hopefully continue to expand our brand."

Fans attending games at Land Shark Stadium can expect a different experience from what was offered in times past. New renovations adorn the classic football arena with one of the biggest changes being one that cannot be seen, but rather heard. Jimmy Buffet has written a new song for Dolphins fans to cheer too while Tallahassee native, T-Pain, has added his auto-tune stylings to a more modern, revamped version of the Dolphins classic fight song.

O.J. Gets Memorabilia from Vegas Heist

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

O.J. Simpson was given back some of his own football memorabilia that he reclaimed in a Las Vegas heist. For which, he now sits in a Nevada prison for many years.

A California Superior Court judge, Gerald Rosenberg, ordered that the relics be returned to the football Hall of Famer, even though he sits in prison for stealing the very same items.

After more than a year of legal throws, Rosenberg ordered that nine collector footballs be returned along with a few other items. The souvenirs were given to the lawyer of Fred Goldman, the man who filed a $33.5 million civil lawsuit against Simpson, to put up for auction in an attempt to collect the massive judgement.

The judge, however, seemingly ruling in Simpson's favor said the former athlete must get the first $6,075 from the auction. Rosenberg noted that it was possible that amount could not be attained from the auction and there's a possibility Goldman will get nothing, reports the Associated Press.

Bruce Fromong, the memorabilia dealer who was assaulted by Simpson, was able to recover about 600 photographs and several books that he claims were taken from the hotel room during the Sept. 13, 2007 incident.

Simpson was sentenced to nine to 33 years on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and other charges stemming from the hotel room standoff, in which he reclaimed autographed NFL souvenirs, including three neck ties he wore at his murder trial.

Goldman's representation, attorney David Cook, received the nine game balls and two pillow cases from the hotel room for the auction.

Update: Bodyguard of Jay-Z and Beyonce Being Sued

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

It may be the new rule of the thumb for anyone that is under attack by the paparazzi and that is to just let them do what they do and suffer because as soon as a person tries to fight back in anyway, they will be hit with a lawsuit. Jay-Z's bodyguard, Julius, can testify to that as he has reportedly been charged with assault and destruction of personal property.

As Hip-Hop Wired previously reported, the charge is fresh from an altercation that occurred Tuesday night in Croatia with a reporter. The Croatian law enforcement stated that a complaint was filed by (more...)

Gucci Mane Faces Show Protest In GA Town

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

There is no question that the buzz surrounding Gucci Mane is as high as ever. One of the most popular rappers in the nation, the East Atlanta native has been working tirelessly to ascend the proverbial latter to Hip-Hop superstardom, with the current musical climate almost assuring that he will do just that. In spite of his success, there are those whom would rather see the rising star fizzle out before he has even reached the pinnacle of success, opting to stymie his efforts for reasons that they assume would benefit the greater good. Bob Langford, city commissioner for Albany, Georgia, is one of those people.

Plaxico Pleads Guilty, Gets Two Years

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

The court system is just racking up NFL stars. The latest inmate will be former New York Giant Plaxico Burress as he pleaded guilty today to a weapons charge for illegally having a firearm. His mistake may have benefited him, however, as him accidentally shooting himself helped to make a plea agreement for a two-year prison term.

Initially the football star was indicted this month with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment, but has since been lowered to one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He was originally slated to do a bid with a minimum of 3.5 years if he was convicted of the charges against him. Guess Plaxico should take it in stride.

There could be a shed of hope, or at least a lighter sentence, as good behavior could shave his time down to 20 months. His attorney, Benjamin Brafman stated that two years in itself seemed extreme as the criminal act was not intentional.

Spanning back to the Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan, New York, back in November, Burress along with former teammate Antonio Pierce were in attendance. The actual issue was when a gun that was tucked into Burress' waistband slipped down his leg and rang off a shot. Although the bullet missed a security guard and no innocents were actually harmed, the victim was the gun-holder as the bullets hit Buress in the thigh.

It would be discovered that the firearm was not licensed in New York or New Jersey, as Burress lived in Jersey, and his license to carry a concealed weapon in Florida had expired in May 2008, according to prosecutors.

The Giants wasted no time as they released him from his contract. Burress is known for catching the winning touchdown that not only won the Super Bowl, but also ended the potential perfect season of the New England Patriots and being scarred with an 18-1 record.

Black athletes, this is a plea. Being Black, famous and paid are things that most people don't want to see and some will go at all stops to take the fame and turn it against them. Smarten up guys and make better decisions.

Pitbull Receives The Keys To The City Of Miami

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Miami rapper Pitbull has been given quite an honor as he was presented with the Key to the City from his mainstay of Miami. With such an achievement, the Latino rapper and fans alike can officially refer to him as being “Mr. 305.”

Pitbull took some time to speak and give his reactions after receiving such an accolade in life.

"I can't help but keep staring at it, because it's something I've worked so hard for," Pitbull said, looking down at the gold key. "I'm very passionate about Miami."

The rapper, real name Armando Christian Perez, was given the award (more...)
