Teen Arrested For Shooting Mother In Face, Beating Child

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

An Atlanta teen was arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting of a Georgia woman. Police report that 17-year old Antoine Wimes shot 22-year old Nikki Neely in the face Monday. Wimes was accompanied by 21-year old Donovan McCoy who was arrested the same day of the incident.

Wimes was out on $250,000 bond for murder and aggravated assault charges from a February shooting in Southwest Atlanta. According to police, the two men showed up outside of Neely's house Monday night demanding money. When she didn't comply she was shot in the face and upper torso with a .9 mm pistol.

Police found her lying in a pool of blood and her son with bruises and “crushing-type” of wounds. A family member revealed Wimes' location to police after seeing his mug shot on TV. A reporter from The Atlanta Journal Constitution took a picture of the teen inside a squad car giving the “thumbs up” signal. He later took it upon himself to shout to reporters, “I own this world, like Scarface.”

Both men are facing charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, cruelty to children and armed robbery.

Obama To Appear In Back-To-School Program

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

President Obama will make a special appearance in a back-to-school television program with Kelly Clarkson and Lebron James. The President will appear in a 30-minute documentary that will air at 8 p.m. Sep.8 on MTV, BET, VH1, CMT, Comedy Central, Spike TV and Nickelodeon. President Obama sent out a press release Wednesday revealing the message he would give to students saying:

“So as this new school year begins, I urge you to set goals for your own education: to study hard and get involved in your school, to try new things and find something you're passionate about and that's how our nation will get ahead — by ensuring that every American gets a world-class education, from preschool to college to a career.”

The program is the by-product of a partnership between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Viacom, Inc called “Get Schooled.” The aim for the program is to improve high school and college completion rates. The show will feature the celebrities and their behind the scenes cohorts including Obama's speechwriter, Kelly Clarkson's music director and Lebron James' marketer.

The show is intended to highlight other possible career and monetary outlets and inspire career choices in other fields that are rarely sign but are highly productive and lucrative. As HipHopWired previously reported, President Obama wants to raise the bar on education and stated,

“They might think that they've got a pretty good jump shot or a pretty good flow, but our kids can't all aspire to be the next LeBron or Lil Wayne. I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers. I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court justice. I want them aspiring to be President of the United States."

Body Mix-Up at Funeral Service

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Funerals are a sad enough occasions, but it is tragic when certain mishaps go on. In South Philadelphia, a funeral was suppose to take place Tuesday for Kenneth Monroe Roberts, but the family would come to realize the fact that they body inside the casket was not Roberts and had been mixed up with another man.

Roberts was 80-years-old and was an army veteran. His funeral was set to take place at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church on South Broad Street.

The horrifying part to the story is that the funeral home tried to assure the family that the body was actually their loved one, although anyone should easily be able to recognize someone that they've known for a lifetime.

"They kept trying to tell us that it was him and I knew it wasn't him," the wife of Kenneth Roberts, Janin Holsey, said in an interview with ABC 6 Action News.

Something seemed awry on Monday as family members had initially came to view the body and had noticed that something seemed wrong as they addressed their concerns with the funeral directors.

"I told them it wasn't my grandpop; all his grandkids came in here and said that's not their grandpop. We know what my grandpop looked like, that wasn't him," granddaughter Kenayah Cerban said.

Arrangements for the funeral were handled by the funeral home of James Hawkins located at 17th and Federal Streets and the error was finally recognized on the day of the funeral right before the service actually commenced. Even more dirt was thrown onto the situation once the mistake was announced in the service as the family went into a rampage over the incident and had to wait an hour and a half until Roberts' body actually arrived.

Roberts was, however, face down in the casket and his body was partially hanging out of it. Reactions ranged from a man suffering a seizure to a woman having an asthma attack. The continued madness resulted in the funeral being cancelled.

On the other side of town at the Francis Funeral Home in Southwest Philadelphia, a family dealt with the same issue when they viewed Roberts in the casket and not the body they were meant to mourn. Claire Beverly and her sister were going to lay their father, Charles, to rest when they realized the mix-up and have stated that an apology is necessary.

The funeral homes are owned by Frankie Francis as embalming is performed at the funeral home then taken to the service. No statements or explanations have been released from the funeral home as repeated calls have been unanswered.

White Men Attack Elderly Black Fisherman

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

An elderly black man was attacked by three white men as he fished in a river early Tuesday. Baltimore police said the assailants hollered racial slurs at the 76-year-old man and are treating the case as a hate crime.

Anthony Guglielmi, a police spokesman, said in addition to attacking the fisherman, the three men also stole the man's SUV. Police were able to track the vehicle and arrested 28-year-old Calvin E. Lockner. According to the Associated Press, the two additional attackers escaped and are still at large.

Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealfeld III and Mayor Sheila Dixon met with the victim, whose name has not been disclosed for his protection, in the hospital.

"I ask the people of Baltimore to pray for the victim and his family," Dixon said in a statement. "We must all stand together in opposition to violence and racial hatred."

Guglielmi said in Lockner's interview with investigators, he "admitted he does not like African-American people." Police said Lockner was charged with hate crime, attempted murder, first-degree assault and carjacking. The two additional suspects are believed to be Lockner's friends.

In order for Lockner to be charged with hate crime, which has stiff consequences under Maryland's state laws, prosecutors would have prove the attack was racially motivated.

This in not Lockner's first encounter with the law, as he was charged with rape in 2000, but pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentences to eight years in prison. He was sentenced to another two years in 2007 for violating his probation.

The victim, who is in serious but stable condition, was taken to the Maryland Shock and Trauma Center, the police spokesman confirmed. His wife was with him when he was attacked at the Francis Scott Key Bridage, but was unharmed.
