General Baker Presented With Political Leadership Award

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

General Thurbert Baker, Georgia attorney, had left his footprint in history as the National Bar Association presented him with its first annual Barack Obama Political Leadership Award during its 84th annual meeting that was held in San Diego, California.

Baker was also awarded for his prestige as he was recognized for his achievements as a public servant as well as an elected official.

The award was given to Baker by Rodney G. Moore who was the former president of the NBA as well as the current president, Mavis Theassa Thompson.

Along with the award, Baker has etched himself in time as he is Georgia's first African-American Attorney General as his time in office has spanned all the way back to 1997. Even with it now being 2009, Baker is still holding the title as being the only elected Black Attorney General in the whole nation.

His achievements while in office include him successfully managing the state's legal affairs for over two decades. As his intent is generally geared towards providing protection for families and specifically children, Baker has created firm laws against sexual predators who have an eye for children and attack them through the Internet. Working heavily with local prosecutors and police, they have all collaborated to bring these offenders to justice for their misdeeds.

Work for Baker also comes in the form of preventing domestic violence as he has adamantly fought to make it an offense to engage in this while children are present and has remained close with authorities in order to enforce the safety of family and decrease violence within them.

Outside of being an Attorney General, Baker's work is also in the Georgia House of Representatives where he gave five years of his service. During this time, as floor leader, he led the way in passing some of the most important legislation in the history of Georgia such as the institution of the state lottery and the HOPE Scholarship program.

Two Young Accused Rapists of 8-Year Old Placed In Foster Care

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Two of the four boys believed to be responsible for the rape of an 8-year-old Liberian girl were ordered to be put into foster care. According to The Associated Press, Judge Aimee Anderson ruled that the boys should not be returned to their families and also ruled that one of the 10-year-olds be enrolled in a program to make him fit for trial. The other boy, who is also 10-years-old, was determined to be incapable of becoming competent for trial and charges against him may be dropped. Both boys will be monitored by electronic ankle bracelets.

Phoenix police believe the two 10-year-olds and a 13-and 14-year-old boy lured the girl to a storage shed and raped her on July 16. The case gained national attention after it was reported that the girl's father was ashamed of her and did not want her returned home. The girl is currently in the custody of State Child Welfare Officials.

Steven Tuopeh, the 14-year-old boy pictured above, is accused in the rape of the little girl and is being charged as an adult. His charges are kidnapping, sexual assault and attempted sexual conduct with a minor and five counts of sexual conduct with a minor. Prosecutors are seeking adult charges against the 13-year-old accused in the case as well.

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

There comes a certain time in a person's age where certain behaviors should be deemed as unacceptable. Beanie Sigel is one that comes to mind as he was recently arrested Sunday after a traffic stop resulted in a search where police found weed in the rapper's vehicle.

Brooklyn Artist Delivers 'Candy Crack'

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Brooklyn performance artist, Nate Hill, takes to the streets of Brooklyn every other Saturday night and delivers candy disguised as crack called "candy crack." While some find his antics amusing, others are offended.

What is really crystalized sugar, Hill, 31, delivers $1 bags of his "candy crack" dressed in a white tuxedo and dolphin headpiece between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., reports New York Daily News.

"There's this amusing theater going on and really, it's just supposed to be fun," Hill said.

In sharp contrast, however, some locals feel differently.

"I hate anybody who jokes about drugs," said Ishmael Torres, 75, president of the tenant association at the Borinquen Plaza on Humboldt St. in Williamsburg.

"I've seen too many cemeteries, too many hospitals, too many funeral parlors. The cops should stop this guy."

Vice President of an alcohol and substance abuse treatment center in Greenpoint called the Outreach Project, Kevin Wadalavage, said he is "dumbfounded" by Hill's attempt to be "amusing."

"It's irresponsible just to assume that young people can make the difference and get the act," Wadalavage said.

As a beekeeper for a genetics lab by day, this is not the first time Hill has gone out of his way to provide shock comedy for New Yorkers. His former pranks include Chinatown garbage tours and knee-boucing rides for straphangers.

His "candy crack" spoof does, however, have a few followers.

Ernica Serrero, 21, and a recent Bernard graduate ordered some "candy crack" from Hill for his Williamsburg party last Sunday. "I's definitely do it again. It's a great experience."

The local police are completely aware of Hill's newest feat, but are in no way worried about him.

"People have seen him around," said one police source. "It's just candy. Unfortunately, being criminally stupid is not illegal."
