Tuesday, August 18th, 2009Gates' Arresting Officer Gets Standing Ovation
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009Since the controversial arrest of the astute Harvard professor, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Sgt. James Crowley has made friends with the spotlight. In his latest stint with the lights, camera and action, Crowley received a standing ovation from thousands of police officers Monday when he made the opening speech of a five-day Fraternal Order of Police convention.
According to the Associate Press, more than police officers stood and applauded Crowley when he spoke at the Long Beach Convention Center. When he wrapped up his opening statements, his fellow officers stood and approached him for pictures as he left the stage.
"The past month has been very difficult for my family, my friends and my colleagues back in Cambridge, and it's no exaggeration to say that it wouldn't be as easy for me to handle this without the support from the Fraternal Order of Police ... and the support that the men and women who do this job have given me," he said. "Thank you very much."
Crowley arrested Gates on July 16 after he responded to a call from a woman who reported what appeared to be two men forcing the front door open. Gates said the door was jammed and he and his driver had to shove the door open.
He was arrested for disorderly conduct after Crowley made claims that Gates raised his voice. Gates called the event a case of racial profiling and demanded a apology. The officer, however, said he was simply following protocol when he responded to Gates "tumultuous behavior."
It seems Crowley has become a bit of a superstar amongst his police comrades, while he receives accolades for doing everything any other officer would have done, right?
Roccett Explains The "Fallout" With Young Jeezy
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009It seems that when established artists look to bring their team on and help create a career for them, that is never actually the case. Shady Records has began to chip away as it has lost members such as Obie Trice, Stat Quo and most recently Bobby Creekwater.
Another camp that has gathered a strong force behind it is CTE (Corporate Thugz Entertainment) which is run by rapper Young Jeezy. This camp, however, has been suffering the same fate as camps such as G-Unit with M.O.P. where artists are suppose to blow, but they never come with a project.
Recently, HipHopWired.com conducted an interview with Roccett who is (more...)
First Black NFL Official, Burl Toler, Dies
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009The first Black official in NFL history has died. 81-year old Burl Toler died Sunday at a hospital in California. He was not only the first Black official in NFL history; he was the first Black principal of a middle school in San Francisco and the first Black official to referee a Super Bowl. Before his career as an official he was a star football player for the 1951 University of San Francisco Dons that had the slogan, “Undefeated, Untied, and Undivided.”
The Dons were denied a bid to the championship in 1951 because they refused to leave behind two black players---Burl Toler and Ollie Matson. Toler was forced to stop playing after a knee injury and began officiating for the NFL in 1965. He is survived by his brother, six children and eight grandchildren.
Greg Aiello, spokesperson for the NFL released a statement saying, "Burl Toler was a pioneer as the first African-American game official in pro sports. He was a great athlete who then became a great official. The NFL will always be proud of his contributions to football and his unique place in NFL history."

Man Totes Assault Rifle to Obama Protest
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009Since the the town-hall debates on health care reform have taken a violent turn, some opponents have gone as far as to carry weapons while demonstrating. Perhaps the most disturbing fact, it's legal.
The most recent event occurred Monday when demonstrators outside Obama's speech to veterans in Phoenix, Arizona brandished their unconcealed weapons. This was the second incident in which citizens have brought firearms to a presidential event.
One protestor in particular sent onlookers abuzz when he arrived with an assault rifle slung over his right shoulder.
About a dozen people toted their guns outside the demonstration, Phoenix police said they kept watch over the packing protestors while they peacefully demonstrated.
"It was a group interested in exercising the right to bear arms," police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said.
As Arizona law requires permits for carrying concealed weapons, the state has no regulatory laws regarding assault rifles. Even though the man was in such close proximity to President Obama, he broke no laws and was not arrested nor charged. Hill said he had to explain the gun laws to people who were uneasy about the presence of guns at the protest, according to CNN.
"I come from another state where 'open carry' is legal, but no one does it, so the police don't really know about it and they harass people, arrest people falsely," the man, who remained anonymous, said. "I think that people need to get out and do it more so that they get kind of conditioned to it."
Just last week, a man with a pistol strapped to his thigh protested outside Obama's town-hall meeting in New Hampshire. The state also does not require a license for unconcealed weapons.
U.S. Secret Service spokesman Ed Donavon said he was not aware of any other protests in which demonstrators carried weapons, and also said there was no indication that gun toters planned the incidents.
When asked if the protestors posed any threat to President Obama he quipped, "Of course not."
"We pay attention to this obviously ... to someone with a firearm when they open carry even when they are within state law," Donovan said. "We work with our law enforcement counterparts to make sure laws and regulations in their states are enforced."
Fear of Violence Surrounds 50 Cent Charity Event
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009Good food, music, drinks, kids playing and old folks doing the same old two-step. These are the types of things that revolve around a gathering with Black people and, oh yeah, of course there has to be the unprovoked but much expected acts of violence to close everything out.
Police have already started to express their concern and fear that violence will erupt at an event hosted by rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson on August 30 in New York as they feel that old enemies may resurface now that they know that he will be in attendance. They have added that the area is very hard to control and somebody could come from anywhere as the event is outdoors.

Teenage Rapists To Stand Trial
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009June 18th of the year 2007 will be a day regarded eternally in infamy, as that day bore witness to one of the most sadistic and horrific crimes to have transpired in recent history. On that balmy day, 10 teenagers donning masks forced their way into the home of a 35-year old Haitian immigrant and her 12-year old son. After gaining control of the two victims, the barbarous miscreants proceeded to viciously beat the woman, following it up by gang-raping and sodomizing her for several hours while other members of the group savagely beat her pre-teen son.
Not content with their handiwork, the misguided teens forced their victims to engage in sexual acts, with the mother having to perform fellatio on her child while at gunpoint. Both were then doused in cleaning chemicals in an effort to "cleanse" the scene of any incriminating evidence, fleeing the home soon after. Now, two years after the incident, justice is about to finally be served as four of the main instigators in the assault have a date with a judge.
18-year old Nathan Walker and 20-year old Tommy Lee Poindexter were two of the first suspects to be implicated in the heinous crime, and as such, will be the first to try to weasel out of the case that their defense attorneys have described as "tough." With DNA and fingerprint trails serving as solid police-submitted evidence, etching a "win" in favor of the defense will be nothing short of impossible. Adding to the defense's headache will be Avion Lawson, the youngest of all those involved and self-imposed turncoat. Set to stand trial in September, the 16-year old plead guilty to 14 charges which include sexual battery, burglary, kidnapping, grand theft, and promoting the sexual performance of a child.
Lawson's attorney, Bert Winkler, told the judge that his client was "very sorry" and that he is "...taking responsibility for everything he did,” revealing afterward that he would cooperate fully with the state if called to testify against his former friends. Both Walker and Poindexter are set to stand trial together, though both will have different juries. 17 year-old Jakaris Taylor is scheduled to go to trial in September. If convicted, everyone involved faces the maximum of 11 life sentences and the possible addition of 50 more years with a minimum of 50 years.
In similar news, Tashia Edwards of Syracuse, New York was accused of forcing a teenage girl to have sex with random men to settle a debt that she felt the teen owed her. According police reports, the girl stayed at Edwards' residence in December of 2008 but was forced to stay against her will when she tried to leave. Edwards is said to have taken the girl's clothing, leaving her naked, threatening to cause physical harm to the young woman is she did not engage in a myriad of sexual acts with numerous men to pay off her "expenses" which included fees for food consumption and a room for the night. The 33 year-old woman was charged with two counts of sex trafficking and one count of unlawful imprisonment, two felonies and a misdemeanor respectively and is currently awaiting trial.
Accused Cop Killer Troy Davis Escapes Execution Once Again: Killer Mike & Dr. Boyce Watkins Weigh In
Monday, August 17th, 2009The United States Supreme Court has granted Troy Davis' request to postpone his execution in yet another attempt to clear his name and prove his innocence.
Davis is an inmate that was sentenced to death after the 1989 murder of a Savannah, GA police officer. Since his incarceration, Davis has gained international support behind his claims of innocence.
Justice John Paul Stevens ordered a federal judge to "receive testimony and make findings of fact as to whether evidence that could not have been obtained at trial clearly establishes petitioner's innocence."
Among the supporters of the motion were Justices Ruth Bader and Stephen Breyer. The newest member of the high court Sonia Sotomayor, however, did not participate in the petition. "Brother" Clarence Thomas did however and was one of two judges that dissented their reasons for not taking another look at the case and going ahead and killing Davis.
In the last year or so, Davis' case has been quite turbulent, even being granted a stay of execution just two hours before he was to be (more...)
