Emmett Till's Casket Added to Smithsonian

Friday, August 28th, 2009

The young boy whose death sparked an integral push to the Civil Rights movement is being honored in the country's most prominent museum system. On the 54th anniversary of his death, the Smithsonian is adding the glass covered casket of Emmett Till to their collection of esteemed exhibits. His family made the announcement at a memorial service for Till Friday. The service took place at Roberts Temple Church of God In Christ in Chicago, the same place where his funeral was held. His cousin, Simeon Wright, reflected on the death of his relative during the service saying:

“Fifty-four years ago, I don't know where you all were, but I know where I was. It was a day in Mississippi that the laughter left our home…..no one laughed after that day. "

His casket will be refurbished and featured at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African-American History and Culture, which is scheduled to open in 2015. The casket was in recent headlines after being found in a dilapidated state at a Chicago Cemetery where grave robbers were exhuming bodies. When police went to open the casket, live animals jumped out. Till's body was not in the casket at the time because it had been removed during a reinvestigation of the case.

The 14-year old boy suffered an untimely death at the hands of two white men after whistling at a white woman in 1955. His entire body was mutilated and unrecognizable. During the funeral, his now late mother Mammie Till had an open casket funeral for Emmett so the world could see how racist the country was.

Two Virginia Tech Students Slain, Found In Forest

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Two Virginia Tech students were found dead at a popular hangout spot for students. 19-year-old David Lee Metzler and 18-year-old Heidi Lynn Childs were found at a campground in Jefferson National Forest. Both students were fatally shot. The Associated Press reports that Metzler's body was found inside a car in the parking area of the Caldwell Fields campground and Childs was found outside the car. The police have not identified any suspects as of yet.

Virginia Tech President Charles Stegler sent out an email to students offering solace and counseling for mourners. He writes, “Trauma like this is deeply painful to us all. Once again, this community is visited by senseless violence and tragedy upon aspiring young minds from our campus.”

In 2007 a student gunman went on a shooting rampage, killing 32 students and himself. In another case of violence that seems to have been tightly sealed, a doctoral student beheaded another student in a campus café this past January. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Virginia Tech.

Republican Jokes About Hunting Obama

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Rex Rammell, an Idaho gubernatorial hopeful, sharply rejects the notion he was serious when he made a joke about purchasing a license to hunt the President of the United States.

The underdog candidate, who is running against Republican incumbent C.L. "Butch" Otter in May of next year, made a comment about the state's wolf hunt which requires hunters to purchase an $11.50 wolf tag.

When an audience member blurted out question about "Obama tags," Rammel replied, "The Obama tags? We'd buy some of those."

According to the Associated Press, Rammell sees no need to apologized for his comments because he was joking.

"What I would say to all my Democrat Idahoans: Take a deep breath and relax," he said. "We're not going to go out and hunt Obama."

He added, "I would never support him being assassinated."

Threatening the president is a felony crime that could lead to five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

"I'm probably safe," Rammell said. "I'm not the one that started the whole thing."

"I think the Republican Party in this state and elsewhere would be well served by making it clear those types of comments are very inappropriate," Democratic Party Chairman Keith Roark said.

Rammell is not the first in his state to make comments insinuating physical threats towards President Obama. In November 2008, second and third grad students chanted from a school bus "Assassinate Obama" after his election. The mayor of the Eastern Idaho town publicly apologized a shortly afterwards.

FBI officials have yet to make a statement on whether the agency plans to launch an investigation or if a complaint has been formally filed.
