Obama's 200 Day Mark All But Ignored?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

On the 100th day of President Obama's term, media outlets around the nation recklessly criticized his administration and policies without taking into consideration the time it it may take to repair an 8-year-old deficit. But now that the second hundred days in approaching, nobody seems to take notice or take the time to critique.

"It's the second hundred days?" a senior administration official retorted. He went on to say "the incline on the treadmill is not as steep," the official said, but added, "it's still moving very fast."

Since his election, Obama hit the track running and hasn't stopped for a breather since. Reviving the auto industry, a speech to promote peace in the middle east, health care reform, a trip to the coast of Africa where slaves were once sipped to the New world and the list continues.

While 65 percent of Americans feel the president bit off more than he can chew, he and his administration have made significant strides particularly in the second 100 days. Health care reform appears to be in next in line for the green light after the blindsiding success of the "cash for clunkers" program.

So 200 days in office really means what?

"There's a certain rhythm and level of familiarity," Ernest said. "We understand how things work ... and we're settling more into a groove."
But a senior administration official said it was also a chance to "make sure that everyone was on the same page."

In the 100 days to come, advisors expect Obama to continue his intricate approach to foreign and domestic policies. A senior official said Afghanistan will be the center point of attention and "we'll be watching how things stabilize in Iraq."

Only time will tell the legacy the president President Obama will leave behind, but 200 days in could he be trailblazing his way into a second term? Or is it too soon to tell?

Russell Simmons To Speak On How to Manage Personal Finances

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Ladies and gentleman, if anyone was unaware or under a rock, it must be stated to the people of America that the country is in a recession. For those seniors turning their tassels and celebrating the fact that they have finally graduated college, it might have been the wrong time to enter the real world folks.

A little piece of knowledge to keep embedded in the young minds that recently graduated is the fact that they are about to face the highest unemployment rate in 25 years. This transition in the country heavily impacts the generation of tomorrow as they will be challenged by record student loan debt, expensive health insurance costs and an average of $4,100 in credit card debt.

Trust and believe that mommy and daddy will definitely be taking the pacifier away and cutting that umbilical cord for good once those bills start to hit in. All those times of saying “I can't wait till I'm grown,” well…have fun with it now.

The financial crisis has sent waves of disparity and no one has been left untouched aside from if a person was already without employment then it wouldn't make much difference then. A solution, or more-so a temporary relief has been introduced for the new generation of America as a new program titled Your Life, Your Money is set to premier in September.

Hosted by Donald Faison, who is mostly known from his roles in the series Scrubs and the film Clueless, this new program on PBS is geared towards enlightening young adults on budgeting their money. From banking and credit to investments, insurance and self-employment and more. The show will feature guest appearances by the likes of Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons who will be able to provide his own incite on surviving and staying afloat in troubling financial times.

Donald Faison arrives at the Disney and ABC's "TCA - All Star P

"I think it is important for all young adults to educate themselves on their finances," host Donald Faison says. "I am happy to be a part of something that brings attention to this subject for those just starting out."

This program also gives personal accounts as young people share their stories of the challenges that they have come to face and trials that are awaiting them as they manage and try to make the best decisions with their money.

So for those that are biting their nails and slowly watching six months slip away and are barely in store for what Sallie Mae has to say, there may be hope after all. There might not be much, depending on the amount of loans taken out but hey something is always better than nothing.

Sotomayor Confirmation Vote Set for Thursday Afternoon

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Judge Sonia Sotomayor is expected to win Senate confirmation effortlessly in Thursday's vote as two more Republican senators threw their support behind the country's first Hispanic high court pick.

The final debate is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. and the official vote will be held at 3p.m. White House spokespeople said a swearing-in ceremony could take place as soon as Friday, August 7.

A recent nationwide poll revealed that a vast majority of Americans now support the Senate's confirmation of Sotomayor, reports CNN.

During the full chamber's second day of deliberations, the varying opinions between Democrats and Republican were polarizing in reference to Sotomayor's judicial experience and temperament.

Democrats applauded the nominee as a fair and objective judge with a compelling life story. Republicans, on the other hand, depict her as a judicial revolutionist determined to fulfill liberal political agendas.

Senator Kit Bond of MIssouri was the Republican pioneer that broke away from his party's general consensus and announced he would vote for her despite disagreeing with several of her rulings.

"There's been no significant finding against her. There's been no public uprising against her," Bond said. "I do not believe that the Constitution tells me that I should refuse to support her merely because I disagree with her on some cases.

I will support her, I'll be proud for her, the community she represents, and the American dream she shows is possible."

In addition to Kit, Republican Judd Greg of New Hampshire also backed Sotomayor said he would vote in favor of the nominee and believes she's qualified for the position.

"Although Judge Sotomayor and I may not see eye-to-eye on all issues or share the same political ideologies, our democratic system should allow for such differences," Gregg said in statement.

He lamented what he called the politicization of the judicial confirmation process, saying: "This is why I criticized the Democratic leadership's tactics to block highly qualified judicial nominees during the Bush administration, and these same principles still hold true for me now."

"Here we have a nominee who has had more experience as a federal judge than any nominee in decades," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee that approved Sotomayor's nomination after a four-day hearing.

She has "real-world experience, real-world judging, (and) an awareness of the real-world consequences of decisions."

Congressman Convicted of Corruption; 90K Found in Freezer

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Former U.S. Representative William Jefferson of Louisiana was convicted on 11 counts of corruption charges on Wednesday. Perhaps the most striking detail of the case was the $90,000 cash that was found in his freezer.

Jefferson, 62, initially faced 16 corruption charges, but was ultimately convicted on four counts of bribery, three counts of money laundering, three counts of wire fraud and one count of racketeering. He was acquitted of the 5 additional charges including obstruction of justice.

On June 4, 2007, the former congressman was indicted by a federal grand jury almost two years after federal agents found $90,000 cash stashed away in his freezer. Officials say the cash was a part of an investigation in which an FBI informant captured a shady transaction on video.

Jefferson pleaded not guilty to all charges. He faces a maximum sentence of 150 years imprisonment. Sentencing has been set for October 30.

After five days of deliberating, prosecution filed a motion to take Jefferson into custody. U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis denied the request, ruling he posed no flight risk.

According to CNN reports, U.S. Attorney Dana Boente declared the verdicts proves that "no person, not even a congressman, is above the law."

"We always thought that a powerful piece of evidence in this case was $90,000 in a freezer," she said when asked why the jury ruled in the prosecution's favor.

Jefferson's lawyer, Robert Trout has already expressed his intentions to appeal. "We're very disappointed that the jury disagreed with us," Trout said.

Asked how he was holding up, a seemingly stoic Jefferson smiled briefly and answered, "I'm holding up," before walking away.

Jefferson was accused of accepting hundreds and of thousands of dollars in bribes for himself and family between 2001 and 2005. It is believed that Jefferson used his congressional status to solicit funds for promoting products and services in Africa, particularly Nigeria.

The cash that was found in his freezer was used to obtain a warrant to search his office in May of 2006. Pictures of the open freezer shows bills wrapped in aluminum foil and stashed in frozen food boxes.

Jefferson is Harvard Law School alumni and represented the Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District which encompasses most of the New Orleans. He held office for 18 years before he lost his seat to Anh Joseph Cao in 2008.

"This is a difficult day for the people of New Orleans and Louisiana, but now we can turn the page on a negative past to focus on a positive future," Cao said. "My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Jefferson and his family during this time."
