The End Of The Ringtone Era?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Oh man, could it be that artists now will have to actually start making hotter music? That could be the time that has come as it has been reported that ringtone sales have declined according to a recent analysis from SNL Kagan.

SNL Kagan is a division of SNL Financial LC that is a resource for financial intelligence in the media and communications sector. It integrates breaking news, comprehensive data and expert analysis into an electronic database which is available online.

According to the analysis, ringtone sales have seen a decline as they have shrank 24% in 2008 as opposed to the previous year. Sales have gone from $714 million in 2007 to $541 million. The share for ringtones has also (more...)

Senate Will Likely Pass 'Cash for Clunkers' Program

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Do you have a gas-guzzzling piece is scrap metal passing for a car? Did you miss the one week government incentives to get cash for your clunker? Well never fear, because the auto industry had the best week it's seen in months thanks to the Obama administrations progressive thinking "cash for clunkers" program.

Before leaving this week for August recess, the Senate leaders from each party predict the overwhelmingly popular program will and should continue.

"We'll pass cash for clunkers….before we leave here," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

"In the end, we know where the numbers are," said Sen. John Thune of South Dakota a critic turned advocate who said he now expects both parties to approve additional funding, reports CNN.

The predictions are a far shot from earlier in the week when critics from both parties insisted a quick pass from the Senate was an unlikely move. Due to the massive response packing auto-dealer show rooms lawmakers took a gander at the possible revival of the industry.

The initiative pays consumers $4,500 for trading their gas guzzler for a more fuel efficient vehicle. While the bill hung in the rafters for more than a few days, the $1 billion dollars allotted to the program was spent dry in less than two weeks time.

Fiscal conservative Sen Jim DeMint of South Carolina opposed the bill but recognized its merit.

"Whenever we spend money around here they got the votes," he said.

Mullage…It Really Ain't “Trick'n” If You Got It

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Mullage, the duo responsible for Atlanta's summer anthem “Trick'n” is hoping to transgress their home town appeal to national notoriety. Described by L.A. Reid as a mix of Outkast and The Dream, the masterfully blended mix of hard-body Southside Atlanta representative B-Boi and his smoother than silk Southside counterpart, B-Town, they're bringing to the scene a collage of R&B and Hip-Hop, a “mullage” if you will, from which they took their name sake. The duo told HipHopWired exclusively:

“We took the first two letters from the word music and we brought it back to our lifestyles. We know the different genres of music and put it together in a sense. It's the story of the different lifestyles we lead that all brought us to the place in which we are now. A little complex but we made it work.”

Both B-Town and B-Boi took to the seas and enlisted in the Navy before (more...)

Obama as 'Joker' Poster Borders Malice, Phantom Artist Mum

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

A poster of Obama in make-up resembling the Joker, a character from the film "The Dark Knight," went viral immediately in the streets of Los Angeles, under the image is the word "socialism." The "artist" remains silent.

As if the picture isn't discourteous enough, the implication of Obama single-handedly reforming government and society into socialism completely undermines the mission and agenda of his presidency.

The phantom artist created the poster from the October 2006 issue of Time Magazine featuring Obama on the cover and added the "Joker" face to the shot, according to the Associated Press.

According to various reports, the poster has been circulated and spotted throughout different parts of L.A. and Hollywood since Monday (August 3), particularly on highway ramps and underpasses. There have been reports of poster sightings in Atlanta as well.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, L.A. activist and columnist has beckoned the creator(s) to come forward, announce themselves and explain the motivation behind the poster.

"Depicting the president as demonic and a socialist goes beyond political spoofery," says Hutchinson, "it is mean-spirited and dangerous.
"We have issued a public challenge to the person or group that put up the poster to come forth and publicly tell why they have used this offensive depiction to ridicule President Obama."

On behalf of the staff here at HipHopWired.com, we join Hutchinson and encourage the mastermind behind the poster to make themselves known, exercise their freedom of speech and explain his/her intention. Such a statement deserves expounding. Otherwise, remaining mute could be rendered just as cowardly as white sheets and burning crosses. Just saying.

First Black Newspaper Remains Anchored in Failing Print Industry

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Media is in a time where news and information are readily available and there is simply no real way for the print industry to keep up with the rapid updating the internet provides. As a result, 10,000 newspaper jobs have been lost and more than 100 newspapers have shut down their presses forever. Magazines have also taken a loss as the popular urban magazine Vibe has shut down as well and The Blender.

In the midst of a crumbling print industry, one newspaper still remains a force to be reckoned with. The Philadelphia Tribune is was first and now the oldest black continuous print publication in the country. This year marks its 125th anniversary after it's 1884 debut. The newspaper was established to project the voice of African-Americans and inform the masses of civil injustice.

Robert Bogle, the Tribune's current president who spent many years as a child at the Tribune publication office, "My father worked here, and so i grew up here as a child. I would see the men and women that worked here, in those days we printed out paper right here in this building."

The press they used more then 70 years ago remain in tact and inside the building.

Father Thomas Logan, 97, who sold the Tribune as a boy said, "Every issue he would have something about the black people and people wanted to read about themselves." That still holds true today.

Philadelphia native Sam Muelbellieger, says, "It's really our home base paper that really taps the heartbeat of the African American community and other papers don't tend to gravitate toward that area. So we have something like a family type of situation with the Tribune."

Senior vice president, Bertha Godfrey, has been a part of the publication staff since 1946. She says family has forever been the essence of the Tribune.

"It was like a family, we looked out for one another," she says. "My boss E. Washington Rhodes, if you needed $500, he would see to it that you got it, right out of his pocket. And we didn't have any money back then. I remember we could hardly make payroll."

Many print industry big wigs are most likely feeling the pressure to produce and circulate, however, Bogles believes the Philadelphia Tribune will continue to thrive for years to come "Because we're doing today what Chris Perry did 125 years ago. And today, like 125 years ago, that continues to be. And that's why."

The Philadelphia Tribune continues to circulate 220,00 printed copies per week and is published five days a week.

Game Releases D.O.H. Shirts

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Man, maybe Jay-Z shouldn't have called The Game a groupie.  It has been reported that the West Coast native has taken his rap beef with the Brooklyn MC a step further by creating and releasing D.O.H. T-shirts which clearly is abbreviated for Death of Hova.

This may seem reminiscent of the G-Unot campaign that was orchestrated by The Game during his beef with his former group members.  With the fan backing that Game was able to receive in that campaign, it could mean trouble for Jay as his album continues to approach and he has kept his mouth closed as he is having rocks thrown at him from all sides since he released “D.O.A.”  While the front of the shirt reads “D.O.H.,” the back says “T-Pain Stays, Old Hova Goes.”

This battle has honestly been pulling along for some time as The Game has continued to throw (more...)

Thuggin' It & Lovin' It: Ignorant Thugnificence At Its Finest

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

No doubt the boss at Millionaire Entertainment is salivating over all the press coverage of his latest brainchild, "Thuggin It & Lovin It." A seemingly unending media juggernaut lead by traditional media outlets as well as new media representation has set the streets abuzz, igniting sales of the video that were never expected. As the Notorious B.I.G. famously said, "Mo money, mo problems," as quickly as copies are flying off the shelf, they could force some people be flying into the clink.

Pressure from outraged citizens has forced Louisiana authorities to create a pan of action against the underground phenomena, with parish authorities deciding that identifying many of the people in the infamous "gangsta" documentary would be the best method to quell the public.

"Thuggin It & Lovin It" features a number of menacing (more...)

Clinton Persuades Kim Jong Il to Free Imprisoned U.S. Journalists

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Just hours after former President Bill Clinton exchanged words with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, the two imprisoned journalists who were sentenced to 12 years in a labor prison for border trespassing.

"They are en route to Los Angeles, where Laura and Euna will be reunited with their families," spokesman Matt McKenna said in a written statement.

A relieved U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, "Obviously I am very happy and relieved to have these two young women, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, on the way home to their families," she said upon her arrival in Nairobi, Kenya, for an economic forum.

"I spoke to my husband on the airplane, and everything went well. We are extremely excited that they will be reunited soon when they touch down in California," the secretary of state said. "It is just a good day to be able to see this happen."

North Korea pardoned Lee and Ling and released them after having spent about four months in prison on charges of entering the country illegally to orchestrate a smear campaign.

According to CNN, Lee and Ling said in a phone call in July that North Korean officials were willing to grant amnesty if a high-ranking U.S. diplomat was willing to travel to Pyongyang.

The reporters families and former vice president Al Gore, who owns the California-based media outlet that employs Lee and Ling, recruited the support of Bill Clinton.

After U.S. officials determined his visit would ensure the release of the reporters, Clinton was dispatched.

Officials made it clear that Clinton's visit was strictly a private humanitarian mission and not one of present international affairs, including North Korea's controversial nuclear program.

Laura's father Doug Ling said the news of his daughter's safe return home made "One of the best days in my life ... I figured, sooner or later, they'd be back."

He believes his daughter would continue her journalistic career "Despite this terrifying experience." He added, "I can't imagine that Laura would give up her passion to tell stories that otherwise wouldn't be heard."

"All of us at Current are overjoyed at Laura and Euna's safe return. Our hearts go out to them -- and to their families -- for persevering through this horrible experience."

While North Korean's state-run news agency insists Clinton apologized, reports are vastly different.

"Clinton expressed words of sincere apology to Kim Jong Il for the hostile acts committed by the two American journalists against the DPRK after illegally intruding into it," the news agency reported.

"Clinton courteously conveyed to Kim Jong Il an earnest request of the U.S. government to leniently pardon them and send them back home from a humanitarian point of view."

In sharp contrast, however,  a U.S. official insists he is unaware of any apology. He went on to say the two met for about three hours and 15 minutes, and did not hear what was discussed.

The report from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the nation's official name, described the agreement to release the journalists as "a manifestation of the DPRK's humanitarian and peace-loving policy.

"The DPRK visit of Clinton and his party will contribute to deepening the understanding between the DPRK and the U.S. and building the bilateral confidence."
