Tavis Smiley and Others Named In Racist Loan Scheme

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Several lawsuits against banking behemoth Wells Fargo are silently shaking the foundation of minority-banker relations that are not entirely due to their misguided business practices. One of the Nation's largest mortgage lenders and key player in 2009's great housing bust, Wells Fargo, is being accused of coercing members of the Black and Hispanic community into high-cost subprime mortgages. They are accused of disguising their underhanded deeds by parading “high ranking” minorities to conduct fake seminars on wealth building. Acclaimed author and television personality, Tavis Smiley, as well as Kelvin Boston of “Moneywise” fame are being called out as integral figures in the lender's dastardly scheme.

Launched in eight cities, each seminar was more successful than the last, due mainly to heavy advertising on Black media outlets. The event was only made bigger with the presence of Tavis Smiley, who lectured at the seminars, often speaking of the lack of trust that he and most minorities have in America's financial institutions. Kelvin Boston explained himself saying,

“My spiel was the financial planning process, how to be able to save and invest in the future, and to have a plan of action.

In one of many lawsuits against the lending giant, the city of Baltimore accuses loan officer at Wells Fargo of calling minority borrowers “mud people” while renaming subprime mortgages “ghetto loans”. A suit in Illinois targets the company for what it deems as deliberately targeting minorities for risky and high-rate subprime mortgage loans while giving white borrowers in similar financial positions loans with lower-costs. Also noted in the lawsuit is the story of one former Wells Fargo employee, who revealed how she was scheduled to speak at a “Wealth Building” seminar but was told by management that he was “too white” and that only Black employees were allowed to make presentations.

Smiley, who has had a relationship with the bank since 2005, maintains that he partnered with them due to their “commitment to increase financial literacy in the African American community,” also noting that his “partnership with Wells Fargo focused on building personal wealth, which for most Americans, begins with buying a house.” For his part, Boston said that he and Smiley were nothing more than hired speakers.

“We didn't have any role or any control over what else happened.”

Both Smiley and Boston refuse to state how much they were paid for the 15 speaking engagements that they shared while speaking for the banking company.

Van Jones Breaks His Silence

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Tired of being a political punching bag, Van “The Ex-Green Jobs Czar” Jones, spoke out for the first time since his expedient resignation for speaking his mind. The ex-Obama administrator sent out an email to his friends and supporters and keeps it real saying that he has nothing but love for Obama.

“I want to be clear that I have nothing but love and admiration for President Obama and the entire administration. White House staffers are there to serve and support the President, not the other way around. At this critical moment in history, I could not in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. The White House needs all its hands on deck, fighting for the future.”

He also asks his supporters to continue to defend him on blogs and message boards as well as on the “Stand With Van Jones” Facebook group and “I Love Van Jones” Twitter page.

“Stay connected and speak up for me via your favorite blogs (e.g., Huffington Post, Grist, Jack & Jill, etc.), on message boards and all of your favorite social networking platforms (Twitter, Facebook, etc.). Supporters have set up a couple of them, to help you stay engaged, including: I Stand With Van Jones and I Love Van Jones.”

Jones also mentions that he will defend himself and his character in due time saying,

“In due course, I will be offering my perspective on what has happened--including correcting the record about false charges. In the meantime, I must get my family affairs in order and sort through numerous offers and options.”

In layman terms, the email would probably read like this:
Support the president because yeah his people did me dirty but we're still cool. Check out my Facebook page and add me on Twitter too because hell, I need more followers. Oh and don't' worry I got something for the people that got me kicked out, but be patient.
At least that's how I took it…

Wilson's Son Says 'There is not a Racist Bone in my Dad's Body'

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Alan Wilson, South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson's oldest son, spoke out about Former President Carter's comments on the "you lie" outburst, saying it was "based on racism."

In his presidential center in Atlanta Tuesday (Sep.15), Carter said he believes Wilson's outburst was racially motivated and made out of fears of an African-American president.

"I think it's based on racism," Carter said. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."

Wilson's son, however, feels differently.

"There is not a racist bone in my dad's body," Alan, who is running for state attorney general of South Carolina, said. "He doesn't even laugh at distasteful jokes. I won't comment on former President Carter, because I don't know President Carter. But I know my dad, and it's just not in him."

"It's unfortunate people make that jump. People can disagree — and appropriately disagree — on issues of substance, but when they make the jump to race it's absolutely ludicrous. My brothers and I were raised by our parents to respect everyone regardless of background or race."

The former president said Joe Wilson's outburst is a part of a trend aimed towards the President in which people are likening him to terrorists, socialist and Nazi leaders.

"Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," he said. "It's deeper than that."

Wilson, was officially reprimanded in a House vote on Tuesday for shouting at President Obama during his speech on health care reform.

Former Democratic chairman of South Carolina does not believe Wilson's outburst was racially motivated. However, he believes that it does propel racist sentiment.

"I think Joe's conduct was asinine, but I think it would be asinine no matter what the color of the president," said package Harpootlian, who has known Wilson for decades. "I don't think Joe's outburst was caused by President Obama being African-American. I think it was caused by no filter being between his brain and his mouth."

Harpootlian pointed out that he did, in fact, receive a number of racial e-mails after he spoke about the House vote Fox News.

"You have a bunch of folks out there looking for some comfort in their racial issues. They have a problem with an African-American president," he said. "But was he motivated by that? I don't think so. I respectfully disagree with President Carter, though it gives validity to racism."

Hm, seems like this about the only issue with some level of bipartisanship agreement. But if only we could get the White House to admit racism still exists and that since the election, folks who are uncomfortable with the President are using health care as a platform to spat their racial hatred.
